25p on a litre of fuel, thereby taxing those who do more miles and use more fuel, more economical cars will pay less as they do under this tax scheme! :)

4.54609 litres (1 gallon)

4.54609 x 25p = £1.14 per gallon
10,000 miles per year / 30 per gallon = 333 gallons

333 x £1.14 = £379.62 car tax per year

only problem is they can't check whether you've got MOT or Insurance, so there'd be more people out there driving without both of these!!! :(

and how would you sell that idea to the allready very vocal people who use and need fuel for commercial reasons such as haulage companies ?

do you mind paying lots more for everything else other than your fuel ?

and yer suggestion as an alternative method of taxation is ?

It's not the issue of the tax.. I can quite cope with the tax I mean it must be worth it for all that road use...

and it is not as if the roads are full of pot holes is it
or conjested to bugger
or full of road humps
or full of money making speed cams
(not saying that the motorist pays a fortune on these roads(dirt tracks) and see next to nothing of it)

BUT

The issue is my car is 5 years old
I have owed it for over a year

I have made my decision before this nonsence started

now he is charging me for this.

Why should someone spend the same tax on a mondeo car that is 7 years old and runs the family around
than
a brand new £100,000 range rover, porche, or other top notch car that is owned by twits earning more than 200k / year

If it realy is a green issue then you need to change what people will do and not punish for what people have done.

I for one would have got a manual if I had known that i would be hit like this... OR not even got a freelander at all...

stick that in your pipe and smoke it!!!:p

the increase is just about the same price as a couple of tanks of fuel

do you check that yer tyres are fully inflatted before every trip ?
do you minimise how much junk you carry in the vehicle?
does your driving style minimise the need to brake ?
do you need to use your vehicle for every trip ?

there's plenty of peeps who will readily jump up and down when their wallet gets opened against their will yet very few who will put any effort into doing things that will save themselves much much more

it's a fact of life that everything is going to be costing more so unless you can invent a vehicle that runs on fresh air some peeps might just have to stop living beyond their means or work a bit harder to earn a few quid more

unless you also have a plan to solve this "issue" ?

Errrrr...

Boat missed compleatly...

The cost of the fuel is not the issue (though there is more tax on our fuel than almost any other country)

It is about the road tax and the 7 year old vehicles that are being hit when people have made the desision to drive that vehicle.

The idiot brown is promoting the ideal that it will influence peoples car desisions which again I have no problem with

BUT

he is having ago at people who have done what they have done months and years ago.

How would you feel if say your house had a tax put on it because you painted your door blue 4 years ago

it's just as irational

think we all need to do wat sean says, and live within our means a lil more.

or jus start a revolution!which evers easier

PS i haven't got a problem with my Car Tax (td4 late 2002), i was just making a suggestion for alternative since you asked for one!

I'm not sure but i expect haulage companies already pay a hefty amount in vehicle tax, 25p was a roundabout figure, could be less, still based on mileage and road use then, not just what vehicle you own!

As a resident living in a semi rural area im forced toi use ny car for journeys to/from work, there exists NO public transport to my or my partners places of work so in effect we are being taxed for going to work to pay our taxes... we tow a caravan and dont travel abroad at all..... im really happy about being fleeced yet again by this t wattish government! its time to take our cars and park them in the roads for a couple of weeks.... no work..... no road traffic movement especially around the capital airports and ports. a total halt to manufacturing... wonder how long it would be before that jockanese non elected jizz monkey squeaked then??

if you blockade then everything goes in short supply - then peeps have to pay more to get what they want

how will you then be better off ?

there is never a perfect answer to anything "political" - the art of being a polititian is being able to please most of the people most of the time hence them currently being in power - everyone is free to vote for whoever or do whatever they want in order to make change, the sensible peeps have long ago accepted that "fighting" such issues isnt going to make a tiny bit of difference and just get on with life as it is

and if someone starts a conversation about proportional representation i will shoot the cat

I know what your saying, but it's difficult to do this when the government keep changing the goal posts. I like many others got caught out with this & have committed to a loan for 3 years for my TD4 Auto. Had I known before, I could have made a choice & gone for an X Plate TD4. Also, as for the two tanks of diesel argument that seems to be doing the rounds, that's nearly 2 months of running for me........................................still, each to their own
