Old, nackered 'n broke, but the Landy is fine . :)

Front offside wheel bearing or CV collapsed ... at 65 ish on the M1 .. and stopped the wheel turning immediately!!!

Sphincter factor 9.5 Juliet wasn't too happy.

Home now, wheel's freed up enough to drive off the tow truck, then locked again, then freed enough to get it in the driveway ..

Feckit, can't be arsed to look at it now. Very loud banging noise when it freed off and rotated so sounds pretty rough and as though it'll need serious fettling and new bits!

Strangely no brake pedal so wonder if a caliper bolt's broke or something similar ... there was so much smoke I couldn't see properly.

Damn, I love my Land rover ..... ;)

Nothing to picture .. I can take pics of the skid marks on the drive if you like ... ;)

Daft sentence really .. here you go ... ;)

oops ...

Hub, rubber cap missing, presumed it got hot and melted off .. smoke was coming from the flange/hub area when we stopped.

Driveway, reversing towards the camera, offside front locked up until right at the end when it banged and rotated .. and clanged and banged till inside the gated, locked area .. ;)

Well slap me ... I can't do anything right today.

and just noticed the Attachment uploader isn't working .. not my fault .. ;)

Me skiddy pants went straight in the washer ...

The same happened to mine before i got it, the front left wheel locked up at about 60 down a country lane. Changed the bearings the other day and the inner one came out in like 100 pieces haha the only thing holding it straight was the remains of the brake pads!

Yeah, same thing happened to us a few years back, same stretch of road, nearside rear bearing went, while we were towing the caravan!! Drove that one back, but the onner race had welded itself to the stub axle so needed a new stub too ..

Sounds nasty! Glad you're ok!

With the wheel not running true it will be pushing the pistons back in the calipers, so the brake pedal will go to the floor on first push to push the pistons back out again.

We get quite a few Defenders in at work and upon stripping the hub there is barely a teaspoon of grease in em, must save LR 10p per car. If I had a Defender I would strip and grease all the wheel bearings properly and grease the splines too.

My daughter bought a Renault Megan from a garage and the back brake would grip suddenly. Turned out it was the brake shoe lining had come free and was jamming in the hub.

What's annoying me is that I changed all bearings about 4 months ago, when I also did the gearbox and diff oils too. Also changed that same CV joint about 8 months ago! I know there was loads of grease in, though since then I have been wading a number of times! My guess is a seal's failed and allowed water in ... it soon turns to paste when it's muddy water ... and it's not been checked since the last trip out! :(

So, the parts, the problems and hopefully the solutions .. ;)

1, my garage. Well ventilated but the underfloor heating has issues ..

4, Parts wouldn't come out, cold chisel and brute force needed ..

7, Feckit, too cold, Three hours to get the wheel, bearing, hub and disc off, and still there's bits of bearing stuck to the stub axle.

The CV joint sounds really suspect, rough, clangy and definitely not right, but that'll have to wait for tomorrow, or another tuit .. ;)

my passenger went other day, 1st it felt like id locked up on ice as car pulled to one side then carried on normal...everything felt normal, then after a while realised brakes needed pumping to get them to work properly..still no nasty bangs, grates or metal sound, so decided to check it and bobs ur uncle passenger side wheel was really bad, so stripped down and sure enough loads of bearings fell out, but it had scorred the stub axle..managed to file it down abit and tap new bearing on, but think i now need to get stub axle and bearingsfor when it oes again cos i dont think it will come off lol.
