Hey all!

Thought I would ask for everyone's opinions as recently my MOT place was super confused as they think my EML has been blanked? Now... I thought that because this car F1 1.8 2000 is technically before the OBD-2 Requirement it does not have an EML hence it never showed up, I've seen many pre 2000 cars, especially the Mazda MX5 which 1999 models I know also don't have an EML.

My MOT place were CONVINCED that this is supposed to have one, but they also think that because you can physically plug an OBD-2 reader into the car, it is OBD-2 compliant (which it is not) so they believe a fuse has blown somewhere.

I don't suppose anyone has any info on the EML for the Pre 2001 Freelanders? My dash is the lowest spec trim, so I can see the outline for the EML but it doesn't look "blanked" and it didn't even come on when the engine blew up! 😂

Any help or info is appreciated!

It's harder to prove something doesn't exist than that it does. I would assume any MOT would know of the cut-off years for various features. I tried looking at the RAVE, but I wasn't able to find anything regarding this(it's a bit out of scope). Maybe showing the wiring diagrams, but I doubt that would be accepted as evidence.
I'd try convincing them by referring to the manufacture date, and possibly getting a second technicians input.

I'm pretty sure my 50th anniversary 1.8k had an EML. It uses MEMs 1.9, which does have the facility to output EML requests.
It's not OBD2 compliant though, although it does have a connector that looks like an OBD2 port.

How interesting... Mine is a 50th anniversary 1.8k so I should imagine then it does have an EML, the car has a slight misfire, I should imagine that would show the EML? I don't have a P-Scan yet :(

Guess once the MOT is done I will get looking into why that doesn't work, much like all other cars I've owned it should show when I turn the key to the accessory position right?

EML.doesn't light as a test when switched on.

I will double check that !! But sure it doesn't.

I can put Pscan on it for you when you pass through.

So petrol cars don't have it.

My 2003 1.8 Petrol has an EML. It has shown at times.

Not with emission problems though and I am pretty sure it doesn't power on at key turning time.

Lat time it showed it was a coil pack fault which is not fitted on early models.

The dash display will be a part shared between petrol and diesel models.

This could cause confusion because the petrols probably still have the MIL there with the MIL icon, but it isn't used. Additionally confusing because it has the ODB-11 shaped socket for diagnostics.

It looks like there must be a lot of grey area requirements when F1 was produced. Things such as cars built after 1996 needing to be ODB-11 compliant. F1 obviously wasn't, so was this only in the US, where F1 wasn't available till the V6 was released, or was it optional for a while after? It looks to be assumed that ODB-1 had a MIL light, but obviously the K F1 didn't, or at least didn't use it. So, once again, is it just an assumption or a US specific thing?

I'd imaging F1 having an ODB-11 shaped diagnostic port is probably because they knew they would have to adopt it soon after release, so designed it with that to minimise changes once it was implemented.

With no MOT i can't bring it down unfortunately, though I appreciate the offer, tried to bleed the brakes today but they won't? No air is coming out but the pedal goes to the floor and there are no leaks so super confused on that point but that's another story haha! As for the emissions I'm going to replace the O2 sensor and failing that I think it will need a HG as it is drinking coolant, but another thread for that, I'll mark this one as solved.

Thank you both @andyfreelandy and @GrumpyGel
