I have today discovered that my engine woes, are probably due to oil coming through the fuel injection loom and into the red pug / socket into the ECU.
I have been told by Land Rover, that this is a pretty expensive thing to replace (no surprise there).

What can I do????

Ask Ratty. shifty or james martin by PM and you will get less grief and best advice. good luck there was a recall on them, with new seals as a fix but most people never new it

i replaced mine and used brake cleaner to flush the rest of the loom to the red plug, did it every few days over a couple of weeks until there was no sign of oil at the red plug

Because I am an idiot, can anyone give me step by step instructions on how to do this injector loom change.

Many Thanks.

Just for the record, I was told by the dealership, that this problem occurs because folks use the wrong kind of oil!!!!!

Look back I said try those 3 as they have done many and are the pros........... they make there living doing that stuff

Cobblers !!!!!

It happens on TD5s serviced by main dealears using the "right" kind of oil so how would they explain that? I'd go back and ask just to watch them squirm.

What they mean is they know its a design problem but have been told to blame the customer and charge them for the privilege.

Take the cam carrier cover off and put the gasket somewhere nice and warm to soften it. Or get a new one and do the same.
Unplug and remove the injector harness.
Fit the new harness making sure the O ring that fits to the cam carrier is not twisted and plug all the injectors.
Refit the cam carrier using the warm gasket. Dont overtighten the cover bolts.
Flush out the main harness plugs with brake cleaner. You will have to do this several times until no sign of oil over several days but it only takes a few minutes.
Plug everything back together and you should be good to go.

Occassionally you may need to take the ECU cover off and carefully flush any oil out again with brake cleaner. Make sure the ECU is completely dry before closing it up and trying to use it. I use my wife's hair dryer for this as a hot air gun is too hot.

Ooops just seen the link to the procedure above.
Its a tad more detailed than mine but its the same job.
BTW if yours is a Defender and not a Disco the ECU is under the drivers seat rather than under the bonnet.

Thanks Shifty.
I have just sprayed the whole red plug with brake cleaner, but I reckon it is going to take some cleaning. The hair dryer is a good idea. I was going to use just compressed air.
Did you remove the ECU from the Landy before cleaning it, or did you clean it in situ??

remove it and then let it drain onto some tissue or similar.
