Hello all
has anyone had any temperature problems on 19j and had to replace the oil cooler thermostat,my temperature gauge will nearly cross into the red, thought it might be the radiator,got no leaks at all,does not use any water at all, but on a long run the gauge will nearly be in the red.
 
that temp guage is indicating your coolant temp..... 19j are well known for over heating, you sure your coolant thermostat isnt stuck shut, or your water pump failed? or our rad blocked?

have checked all of above, was trying to work out how the oil cooler works and why you would need a thermostat.I know what a temp gauge does and as said I have no issues with anything on the coolant side.
 
After a run feel the oil cooler pipes, should be hot. How is it running otherwise? Any heavy breathing from the oil filler with the cap off?
 
Have you got a viscous radiator fan, if so this may not be working as it should. Is the radiator shrouding all in place to direct the airflow through the radiator.

Brand new viscous coupling fitted 3 months ago,no difference at all, new thermostat and water pump. Shroud all bolted in place,got good airflow through rad
upside to it have best heater in any 110 ever.

Oil pipes nice and hot and its running the best ever just the temp gauge goes nearly off the scale, does not boil over or anything like that,just the usual bit of vapour with the oil filler cap off,hot or cold makes no difference.Possibly going down the route of new temp gauge and sender unit to rule out that.
 
Sounds like motor is ok,Get a capillary temp gauge that reads in numbers degrees,they are reliable and accurate.I have a TIM in mine but other makes are available.

Possibly the temp sender or gauge is duff then, have you tried measuring the actual temp of the engine with an IR temp gun or anything?

A capillary gauge would be the most reliable way of keeping a close eye on the actual coolant temp, the landrover gauges are not particularly accurate

Sorry was not being narky, I appreciate you taking the time to answer, was thinking of trying a cappillary gauge I have one on my old Enfield Diesel engine.
Still trying to get my head round why you would need a thermostat in the oil cooler line.

That is my next thing to try, as I said it does not boil over or anything just my ocd kicking in, do not like the temp gauge too high.
Engine is good enough for me,aint no speed wagon,will do 75 if asked to (down hill gale force wind behind you) it cruises nice at 65 with no problem.
Would just like to get it right,there aint many HCPU'S about anymore.

The tdi era do aswell, I presume it’s to control oil temperature seperate to the coolant temp. I.e When the turbo is on boost the oil probably heats up far faster than the coolant so may need cooling quicker than the coolant?

Same principle as the coolant thermostat - you wouldn’t want to be cooling your oil before it’s up to temp as that would increase wear imagine, I don’t know what temp the oil stat opens and close tho

The stat controls the flow of oil to the oil cooler. Oil has an important role in cooling, as well as lubrication.

I found somewhere to purchase one bout £6 not too expensive,thanks for your answer,its what I have been trying to find out, all makes sense to me, I will be getting it next week so will let you know how I get on.I wondered wether it had stuck in the open position making my temp gauge read high as this hot temp gauge is relatively new thing.
