Strangely not! It's legal now apparently to stick 2,500 litres of the stuff (but call it biodiesel) in yer tank without paying tax on it. That's presumably why in most supermarkets the price has gone up from about 50ppl to about 70-80?

oops that's 2500 litres a year, not all in one go else yerl ave a mighty oil splodge under the motor!
 
it is correct you can legally put 2.500 liter's per year..also you are self govened(ie you are sposed to keep tab's on your useage)..

if i remeber rightly thou this was set up for small biodiesel producer's so if you was to say use a few more liter's than allowed it's you who should ring the taxman and tell him(or not :D )..

the useage of 2500 liters of veggie oil, works out about 660.43 gallons @ (35-47mpg)avg40mpg = 26417.2 mile's per annium(i did the math's on the noted avarage you would have to check your mpg and do the math's to work out your mileage saving)

btw pikey & buster .. took the plung the other day went to fill up called into morrisons bought half my tanks contents off the shelf pulled into their own filling station put the veg in first then filled up the rest with deisel..no problem's at all cold start was three cranks rather than it firing on first turn but no power loss and that smell is quiet nice lolol

their veg oil work's out at 72ppl(didnt have any big bottle's in :( ) but still a fair saving on a tank of deisel

Went into tesco today the bastards have put it up by 10p a litre in the last 2 weeks. Takin the **** because everyone's buying I reckon.

Also most on here are more likely to be using veg oil in a car which gets closer to 20 to the gal than 40, but don't forget you can use your mrs (or "partner's") allowance too. If you ave 33% mix and do 15,000 miles a year at 25 mpg with a saving on veg oil of about 35 pence per litre, you will save £200 per year. Subtract the cost of the extra service and the likely cost of a new fuel pump and the saving isn't that great, also the messing about putting it in. Add to that the immense satisfaction of knowing your 25mpg guzzler is greener that eco-quentin's hybrid electro car and it IS worth it!
 
fab sound good to use veggie oil and derv mix in single tank mine is 200tdi K Reg any normal veggie oil will do?? or sunflower oil only etc?? what about taxman? I understand 2500 litres is tax free then after on pay but I do 12,000 miles ish so well under that! any advice apart from changing oil filter.

Blimey, that sounds almost good news! Do you have to register as a fuel producer anyway, or only if you exceed the 2,500 litre limit?

hi calling on you experts I am not sure if twin tank or just mix ratio 30/70 and 50/50 in winter seems easier what is the advise? I seen in somerfield Veg oil is 2.45 for 3 litres.
 
Twin tank is expensive and you have to start and stop on derv, simplest just to mix (ratios as you say) - tesco rapeseed (which is the best svo to use as it's the thinnest @ ambient temp - aka pure vegetable oil) is £2.21 for 3 down ere. Don't use anything that contains soya oil.

Twin tank you can burn neat svo but need to convert and install heaters etc, and make sure you switch to derv 5 miles from the end of your last journey of the day. bit of a faff for the ave user.
 
Thanks Odenne so it is really safe then to use on my k reg discovery tdi. okay so tescos is selling lot to me then hehe 50/50 for winter and 40 oil and 30 derv for summer correct? what temp degree should I watch before switching from 50/50 to 70/30??
 
No, i use 30/70 (30 oil to 70 diesel) in winter and will change when clocks do to 50/50. Oil is more viscous when colder so needs more derv to thin it. I have a td and is fine and believe it's ok in a tdi, but not personally tried it?

You won't get rich on the savings but neither will the government and your car will smell nice, which makes it all worth it!
