Hi guys I finally brought my 1st 300tdi disco, can't wait to get her on the road but problem is she is blowing black smoke out the exhaust, the previous owner said the fuel pump was turned up could this be causing the smoke, also the gears are really stiff would it be better to change the gearbox I have noticed oil leaking from around the gearbox thank you

Yes to the pump tweeting, lots of badly adjusted ones smoke a lot. Have a search and a good read to understand the process and then you'll have a chance to turn it down a bit without trashing the performance.

Thank you blue beasty I will have a read and hopefully it will solve the smoking, sorry Packard I have tried to edit it but don't know how o_O

We had 4 1998 Defender tdi's in the company. They had wonderful engines. On startup there would be a proper puff of black smoke and then nothing afterwards. My tdi did 356 000km before I sold it. Only clutch, turbo and injectors replaced at about 200 000km. Only changed oil and filters from 60 000km onwards(myself).
