Hi,
I have just bought a 2005 Vogue, after years of P38s.

It starts fine and runs lovely, but I have noticed that around town the temp needle stays at 12 o'clock position, but when I go on the motorway it drops, not right down to the cold, but about 3 or 4 needle widths, is this normal?

Don't know about the L322 but sounds like someone has removed the stat. Unless the L322 has some complex arrangement of sensors and solenoids to control coolant flow. It probably does as they seemed keen to overcomplicate anything they could.

The TD6 has an EGR stat front and centre of the engine that can stick open but that normally causes the temperature to fail to get up to the centre, does it get up to temp quick enough? I changed it on the TD6 I had for a bit and it’s a lot easier than the main. If you can blow straight through it when cold it’s dead but it isn’t quite as straight forward to change as some would say but not bad.

You can check the hidden menu, search on here if you don’t know how to find them, to see what actual temp is, about 75- 80 deg C ish is normal from memory.

The main stat is a known fail and is a bit of a pain to change , it’s a normal non heater type like the petrol has as that runs a lot hotter at 105 deg.c
There is a third stat for the transmission I believe but not heard that causing problems.
I think some have even removed the viscous fan but you could check that to make sure it isn’t over cooling the engine.

Check you actual temps, the TD6 I had used to have the temp go lower on a run but was a little erratic compared to my v8 that doesn’t move a mm once up to the centre as I think it is damped around a certain range.

Thank you so much for your very detailed reply, very helpful indeed. It is going in for a service next week so I will get him to check it, it warms up nicely and stays on the 12 o'clock all round town, it's just when the speed picks up it drops a couple of needle widths, but never back into the cold. Thank again

I would say that is ok, look up how to read your hidden menu temperature, that will give you the exact reading. Normally the faults with these is they take ages to warm up or never get passed the 10 o clock position, if it is only a few needle widths I would think that is alright

On mine the temperature will drop going down hill genuine stat ( 80 bleeding quid ! ) and no problem with egr stat (nudge nudge wink wink)
 
I have read about the temp dropping when going down hill which is a bit weird.
Did you blank of the EGR stat rather than just joining the pipes together, I mean did your friend do that to his RR and not yours ;);).
Doesn't it all have to be back in place now for the MOT rules, on your friends RR not yours of course as yours is all standard.. ?

I, I mean my friend capped off the pipes to egr valve and stat and removed the whole lot by the time he replaced the fan and shroud there`s not really room to see its been done unless of course you know where to look, it went straight through test on first rev couple of weeks ago. I blanked off the egr valve on my p38 diesel when I got it 10 years ago (sold it last october) and on brim to brim fuel figures I got another 2 mpg and that was just round town heavy right foot manual.
 
OK, so thought I would drop in an update, my mechanic tested the actual temperature of the engine and it is running perfectly within tolerances, and the thermos are all operating correctly, he has cleaned the gauge too, and it goes up to temp much quicker now and stays there, with only a needles worth of movement. I'll be keeping an eye on it though. :) Thanks for all the help and advice.
