Can I take the steering lock off i.e unscrew it so I can turn the wheels to get it on a recovery truck

I don't believe it's possible to remove the steering lock, when it's actually locked.
However any decent breakdown driver should be able to get a vehicle on and off the lorry, regardless of the steering being locked, brakes locked on, or whatever.

I have never tried it but is it possible to disconnect the steering column from the steering rack?

If the steering lock has failed would it be cheaper to pick up a second hand steering column?
