Am I right to think that the lift pump works if its sucking on my finger ?

If its something as simple as a filter I'll be a happy bunny

So the lift pump sucks from the filter and feeds the diesel pump ?
I thought it sucked from the tank and feeded the filter

I reinstalled the lift pump and the mechanical handle lost its spring.
Removed it again and without having it bolted on i connected the feed hose from the tank.
Worked the handle and i had fuel.

Then reinstalled it and worked the handle at the very end of its movement a few times and i got diesel.

Cranked the engine and it started bringing diesel from the lift pumps exit pipe.

Next check is the filter exit pipe to the diesel pump and to injectors.
If i have fuel there i'll be checking the glow plugs. If not its probably the diesel pump OR the kill switch in the fuel pump stuck closed...

I've got an auto 300tdi it's spot on off road, have you checked the stop solenoid?
It seems unlikely to be anything other than an electric fault if it died in its sleep as you put it:)
Do edc vehicles have tradition stop solenoids?

Back from a trip to UK. Thought it would be a good idea to see whats causing the diesel not coming to the injectors on the disco today.

So this is what i establised:

Diesel coming to the filter - yes
Diesel going into the pump - yes
Solenoid spring and end bit removed
Cranking without the solenoid brings diesel there.
Solenoid back on without the stop bits.
Diesel not coming out of the pump :(

Fair amount of pressure builds up but nothing coming out.

So diesel pump reconditioning needed

Hi 16v.
I have just read through this thread from start to todays posting.
I like your challenge, but ask have you not yet got a workshop manual for "your" landie.

I only have a disco TDi 200, but have done much work to it.
had it over three years, but know you have to spend out on it from time to time.

Its a landie thing I`m afraid.

good luck, but dont stop now..

Confirmed to be a faulty diesel pump :(

Its 400 euro to repair that alone before adding up the costs of belts tensioners etc

In my experience it's not usually the injection pump that goes faulty,it's much more often the fuel sedimenter blocked; faulty fuel solenoid; faulty lift pump etc etc.

I would want to double and triple check before spending that sort of money on a repair of the injection pump.

Btw, where abouts are you based?

Sedimeter ? Lift pump is new , solenoid works. I get diesel up to the solenoid but doesnt go through the exit pipes of the pump

someone else mentioned earlier to check the cam belt.
if your pumping derv to the injector pump with the solenoid plunger removed, there should be no reason for the pump not to chuck diesel to the injectors.

remove the oil filler cap on top of engine
have someone turn the engine over on starter while you watch for the rocker shaft moving thru the oil filler hole.
if it moves, assumption can be made that the cam belt is still intact. (but would want changing if your keeping it)
if cam belt test ok, remove all injector feed pipes at the injectors.
turn engine on starter, you should get squirts of deisel out of the feed pipes.
if you dont, its looking like the injector pump, if you do its possibly sticking injectors.
hope this helps.
edit-
be aware that if it starts, its gonna be hard to stop it without the solenoid plunger in. you cant just turn it off! even worse as its an auto, you wont be able to just stall it either!
(youll have to undo a diesel pipe to the pump to stop it.....)

Re the timing belt, i cranked it with the solenoid completely off and it squirts as it cranks, so the pump is turning.

I removed the pipes of the injectors completely after re installing the solenoid and no diesel comes through

Anyone knows how much a good second hand injector pump might cost ?

Found a couple on ebay, but I wouldnt know if they would work or not, and obviously I cant return them if they dont.

Hi guys,

found a brand new electronic injector pump - which was imported by mistake from a parts dealer and he is stuck with it. Been sitting on his shelves for a few years.

Went by and had a look, its in its original box with nylon wraps and everything.
He wants 400 Euros for it, just to get it out of his way.

However, he asked me what the symptoms were and how I determined that I need an injector pump, and he suggested that it could need a re-programming !!!
He suggested that we re-program the pump first, using his landrover diagnostics computer, and if it doesnt work, then I can change the pump.

What do you guys think ? Any chance of the immobilizer been blocked ?

You missed the third paragraph as well !

My mate has the ECU diagnostics computer for Landys.

My question is, would programming be a fault that could cause these symptoms ?

ok, the point i'm trying to make, and i've just checked for any paragraph i might have missed, is-
your 300 tdi has a mechanical pump.
your mate has an electronic pump
your mate can recalibrate electronic pumps
you need an ecu to run an electronic pump
your 300tdi wont have this ecu.

unless theres owt else i've missed!
