One of my V8 lifters is making a ticking sound (no..not a terrorist bomb!) it doesnt do it when I start the engine, only when it warms up. I tried some lifter unsticker stuff from the service station before heading south for a 1300 klm drive but that didnt do anything. I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen and if a normal oil change will fix it. (about due)

I thought about some of that oil thickener they use to stop smoke past the rings to see if the thicker oil (when it is cold) actually stops the lifter from ticking. Any ideas?

I wouldn't go for the oil thickener on any vehicle with hydraulic tappets if I were you, more likely to make the problem worse not better if the problem is with an hydraulic tappet, would be suspecting restricted/blocked hydraulic feed pipe personally, although they normally tick at start up if left for a few days until oil pressure reaches normal operating pressure.

You should be able to tell from frequency of tick if it is 1 tappet or not - ie. on a v8 on tickover it would be quite well spaced 'ticks', if you have a timing light you can even work out (within a choice of 3 or 4) which lifter is most likely your culprit.

Can you please explain what you mean by this ?

was a long day, had 200 tdi in my head from another post, thought i'd got away without anyone noticing :D

Thanks for those comments guys...much appreciated.

I did a search for similar subjects and found a post from Dec 2004 with a similar thread and they suggested that an oil change might fix it, but wasnt exactly the same as mine.

It just seems a little strange that it doesnt do it cold. Oil pump problem? hmmmm, perhaps I should just change the oil and see eh? Is an oil flusher additive suggested or will this just loosen more crap to get into the system?

Oil pump problem?

How you mean oil pump problem?

If it's not pumping at enough pressure, you won't just hear it through 1 tappet, if it's the pump making the noise then it's back to the speed of 'tick' that I posted before - ie once every two crank revolutions has to be cam or valve train, more frequent and it's something else.

I just wondered whether it might not be circulating enough oil that was all.
