Old belt was very worn all ribs cracked and bits missing so put on new dayco fine for 200 miles then the squeaking started done the penny trick bliss for a short while the it was back have cleaned the belt and all pulleys but the only way I can get it to stop was by refitting the old worn belt which isn't going to last forever. If I put a little water onto the ribbed part of the belt it shuts up for a few seconds.
 
Mine was lovely and quiet until I fitted a new belt along with water pump and alternator. Doh!

Have tried a couple of belts with no success, I have my suspicions that it may just be the tensioner bearing as a dose of WD shuts it up. That’s this weekends job!

May have a bit of help for you ref the belt supplier, iirc he likes Gates belts.

I'm liking it so far. Only tried the one, but it's stopped the belt squeek on my Defender 300Tdi. Had tried two new Dayco belts, but both squeeked after a few days. Read about Gates belts being a different compound in a thread on here. It's still quiet :)
 
Ok thanks guys just ordered a gates belt see how it goes.dayco belts I'm told are fine but any slight misalignment will cause them to squeak will have to look into that one.
 
I found the gates belt to be harder and smoother on the back. I suspect this makes it slide across the flat pulley wheels, rather than grip and squeek across.

I have had that problem with the a/c belt on my Disco 300tdi, usually can stop it by increasing the belt tension, but of course the main aux belt is not adjustable and should be tensioned to correct tension by the spring loaded tension pulley. Do you think the tensioner is functioning as it should?
 
Tensioner seems fine as far as I can tell still need to use a breaker bar to lift it off the belt and really wouldn't like to have my finger in the way when released.i don't think it's a tension issue as would have squealed like a pig with water.
 
So having got to the point I could barely stand to drive it because of the noise I whipped off the pulley, bearing looks and feels fine with no play. I reverted the talcum powder on the belt which had worked previously and it was delightfully silent again for an entire half mile before it came back. Time for a new belt.

Prior to fitting on closer inspection you could see rubber deposited on the tensioner pulley with a rib all the way around one side suggesting an alignment issue. The parts man suggested the ‘penny trick’. We started with a very thin washer which instantly cured most of the noise, stepping up to a slightly thicker one has silenced the old belt completely so against my better judgment I now have a silent belt thanks to a washer plus a new spare in the boot ‘just in case’.

Seems like a ridiculous bodge but if it stays quiet I’ll be very happy indeed!
