I’m new here but have already posted an introduction . My question is that I have just bought a 2012 Freelander 2 from a garage with FSH and 93k on the clock. Theychanged the cambelt and water pump for me and also put 2 new front tyres on, I’veliterally only had it for 10 days so it’s still under warranty as such . When driving on motorways or going at speeds above 40mphthere is an almost deafening noise coming from the rear end that can only be described as being in a wind tunnel. The car itselfdrives very nicely with no other bumps or noises other than that. I have informed the garage and I’m taking it back on Saturday for them to have a look at. I didn’t notice it when I test drove it but then again I didn’t take it on a motorway! Any ideas what could be the cause so I can sound like I know what I’m talking about! My 20 year old disco 2 with 175k on the clock is not as noisy as the freelsnder2!
 
It's highly likely to be the rear diff (bearing inside this is a known weak point) or otherwise could be a duff wheel bearing.

Make sure the garage sorts it, could be expensive if the diff is the problem.
 
And have the new tyres put on the back. There does seem to be evidence that new tyres on the front are not only dangerous, but could also cause damage to the rear diff and Haldex coupling.
 
Hi. Thanks for your reply. The new tyres were put on the front!! I will ask them to change them over ... will probably need to replace the others soon anyway

Make sure they are all the same make of tyre, and get the car back to the garage while its under the warranty to get the Haldex and rear diff checked out.
 
Thanks . I’m taking it back on Saturday. Currently the new tyres on the front are made by Advantex and the ones on the rear are made by Goodyear ... seems like theses Freelanders are sensitive little souls!

All AWD vehicles should have identical tyres fitted all round. The AWD system has to slip to compensate for the vehicle cornering, but forcing it to slip more than it's designed to by odd mixes of tyres in the wrong place, simply cause expensive damage.

New tyres should always go on the back anyway (for safety), but AWD vehicles really need the new tyres to match the ones which are moved to the front.

A 2012 F2 should have a decent enough rear diff, earlier ones were very poor and most will have been replaced/rebuilt by now - it should have been a LR recall but wasn't.

That is not to say it isn't the diff, the problem needs identifying - I wonder why the previous owner outed it :rolleyes:

Have you had a look under the back of the car and noticed and oil/fluid/grease leaks?

What ever, if there is no evidence of the Haldex being serviced, it needs to be. LR did not include Haldex service (oil & filter) on any schedules, so LR agents will not have serviced it. Other manufacturers using these Haldex units did include it in the service schedule and it has been proved to need doing! Bell Engineering are pretty reputable people for transmission issues on Freelander. They recommend the Haldex should be serviced every 20k miles. Good morning and thank you for your reply. Unfortunately I don’t have anyone in my life who can help with vehicle issues as such so will need to rely on a trusted mechanic ... I have been recommend a very good garage who knows about landrovers and is not a main dealer. However that will be for future use if required. For now I am going to take it back to the garage where I bought it from 10 days ago .. so we shall see. They seem reasonable to deal with and replaced the cam belt at my request without any hassle ... having worked at a car sales office I am fully aware that most people swap their cars when issues start to appear and also that garages won’t fix them unless the customer notifies or complains . Will google what a Haldex unit is and I’m sure I will become soon as knowledgeable about Freelanders ( in a good way ) as I am about old Discos which I had for 10 years!!
 
you say wind noise.... if it has had a new or flat battery in its history the sunroof can loose its calibration and stay open a fraction - that would be wind noise at speed - if its more to the rear could it be a bad seal on a rear door?
Turn you heater blower on full tilt and take a walk around outside to see if you can hear it whistle out anywhere.
you wont need to go outside for the sunroof - you can here that from inside.
I had engine fumes getting in at one stage and did this - and found a poor door seal or two.
 
Thanks for your reply S Walker . I do not have a sunroof and it’s definitely not an open window or door sound. The noise is coming from the back axel and to change the description from ‘ wind tunnel ‘ to drone / wine / hum or whatever , it’s still there and very loud! It’s going back into the garage on Saturday and they will look at it and take it from there !

Mine is also making a whining noise, which is very noticeable, now the engine is so much quieter.
Looks like I've a diff rebuild to do next year. :(
 
Nooo. Hopefully mine will be covered under garage warranty as I’ve only had it for 11 days!!!

It should be covered, or you're within your rights to ask for your money back. ;)

I bought mine cheap as a trade sale, so unfortunately I paid my money and took a chance.:(
