Hi can anyone point me in the right direction,

When the engine is idling there is a noise from the transmision (no knocking or grinding just a noise) that has got louder over the past few months.. but as soon as i dip the clutch its quiet.. release the pedal and its back...

could this be the clutch release bearing that is worn or something in the IRD or Gearbox that needs attention. is there a common fault that i should know about.. i got a FL1 with 107000 on the clock.

Any thoughts would be greatly recieved..

Sounds like thrust - the part is about £55 but it takes 6 hours to do cos you gig to get IRD and Gearbox off.

Just done mine - put a clutch and Duel Mass Flywheel into it as well - cost me £650 in parts and £265 in labour (Inc a rear wheel bearing)

If its a petrol its alot quicker and cheaper job though i guess.

Clutches are cheaper, as are release bearings. Additionally you can get away without removing the IRD.

Although at 107k miles , its prob a td4 :)

Wow it's a 1.8!!! If his profile is correct - ignore my comment then I assumed a TD4

Do i win a cookie?

(36k for a headgasket, engine is 72k, i predict his next headgasket failure is 108k! )

I've never heard a noisey Td4 release bearing, they normally just start drawing in air when they've had enough.

Whereas the K series are normally more audible and in my own very humble opinion i'd remove the release arm when the clutch is out. Then either replace it or clean it up on a wirewheel and copper grease it up before refitting. Those things are crap for blowing clutch hydraulics and making the clutch pedal feel really heavy.

I might be making this up, but dont you get 1.8k release bearings in a clutch kit? Might be worth an ask if you go with genuine parts.

Thanks for the comments guys.. yes ive got a 1997 1.8 petrol..

The head gasket has gone twice since ive owned it.. lasted about 2 years now since last failure.:(

Ive seen clutch kits advertised on ebay including the thrust bearing anywhere between £80-£120

I also read the fault diagnosis page in the Haynes manual... it suggests that the symptoms could also be the gearbox input shaft bearings..ffs that will mean the fl is bound for the scap yard.. cant afford to fix that.

Take the gearbox out and check it firstly then. Release bearings are very noticable when the box is out.

Also gearbox from a scrappers probably wouldnt be anywhere near as much as you'd think. They are hardly rare and arent prone to explode tbh.

ok. so if im lucky:(:( im hoping that the clutch thrust bearing is at fault....

But is the Freelander 1.8 gearbox prone to the shaft bearings wearing out?? if so then any scrap gearbox will probably be in the same condition or near to it
