If by this you mean you can turn the propshaft flange at will with the wheels on the ground, then you could have stripped either the pinion or at least part of the crownwheel.
You may also have other damage in there, like you could have sheared the pinion Drain the oil and see how much metal comes out. But in the end, it'll need severely fixing or replacing.
Prolly easiest to get a secondhand axle.

.If you turn the diff flange with prop off and no wheels on the ground does either wheel turn?

he may do it. Easier on a D1 than a D2 though.Hope he's got a good place to work in!!

Yup, knacked.
Still at least with a new diff on it should be OK, unless whatever caused it reoccurs.
Let's hope it had just reached the end of its days.
