hi this is my first post so hi i hav bought a td5 disco on a 2001 it has 90,000 miles everytime i so much as went on a right had bend it starts whooing from the rear but stops wen going round left bends so i took it to a landrover guy an said he thought it was the back axle and the prop uj could of gone but he didnt hav a proper look just drove it for me so i hav a friend who is a mechanic an he checked ujs an said they were all ok so he has dropped the oil in the axle an refilled it and he has put this stuff in the guy in the landrover garage told me to put in it goes in gearboxs an axles to help oil stay on cogs i think but anyway now i hav done this it sounds louder whooing noise than before could it b the rear axles shot or could it b something else i hav searched the web so much trying to find wot it could b really need some help pls :(
 
I'd say possibly wheel bearing although could be thinking of a completely different noise from "whooing".
Would obviously be rear ns if it kicks in on right hand bends...
 
Whereabouts are you? Someone with a bit more clue might have a listen/look and hear/see what's wrong.

Sounds to me like a diff/bearing problem, or maybe loose bushes ....
 
Where did I put that box of full stops, it's round here somewhere. Ah, there they are, here use these ....................................................... :D

hi thanks all for the advice .sorry about all in one story my head is shot with all the looking i was doing but we aint in a classroom ar we sorry but u preach an u hav no advice on my problem u ar no fun :p.i am in the northwest area .i hav had 3 different mechanics look at it now none hav siad they reckon its the bearing.1 thought it could b the diff bearing .but i also lifted the wheels today so i could give them a good jiggle to see if any movement but all seems well.it does drive nice that wot gettin me if my diff was on it way out would it b just a noise or would i start gettin grating aswell if it was.1 mechanic said best to just wait til it goes thats best way of finding out but am more of a it my new baby i want to find out wot this is

Awww, I was just pulling your leg, but you're right, help first, then take the mickey. ;)

I'm wondering how it could be a diff problem, if it's only on right hand bends something would need to be moving in the axle when you turn that way. If you had a duff wheel bearing then I guess things could move around but the first place to look for noise would be the bearing itself. If you're happy with the wheel bearings then that's probably not it.

Paul D mentioned duff bushes, they'd let the axle itself move and take the rear prop shaft out of line. For it to make a noise I'd have thought either the prop shaft UJ would be tired or there's some play on the drive into the diff. One way to tell if the bushes need changing is to brake hard. If it doesn't stop in a straight line it's time for new bushes.

That's all I can think of for the mo.
 
thanks for that sparks i will try that tomor. it does seem to b even wen am drive in a straight line now i hav changed the oil in the axle. but it goes on left corners its not a dead loud noise that u could hear if u was outside but i think its cos its new to me i am listening intently :D
 
Thinking about it, it tends to be the radius arm bushes that make it wander around on braking. When you're next under it, take a look at the bushes on the "A" frame. They might be letting the acle move from side to side.
 
hi all i hav had my disco at a 4x4 mechanic today. he put it on ramp and said he couldnt see anything wrong underneath including wheel bearing. so he drove it and he could hear the drowning sound coming from the rear.he reckons it the diff is giving up but it does still drive smooth no grinding or nothing and on the motor way it drives great but i am ment to b going to anglesey tomor and i am a bit nervous of weather it will just got bang or something and do a lot more damage. or do u think it may be alrite any advice pls plus does anywhere do reconditoned diffs cos am rather nervous of buying from ebay incase am buying another problem :(

They are pretty strong axles - designed to take punishment off road. If you're going off road or towing something heavy you might have problems (and people like the AA don't like doing off-road recovery). Onroad, a noisy axle might last for years - mine's been whining for 50 000 miles now, and the oil is filthy when we change it every year, but it still works! I'd be inclined to leave it...
