Hi all. I’ve just been on my way home and pulled up at a junction. When I pulled away my discovery started making a noise, like a screaching, coming from underneath. I pulled up and put it in neutral and engine was fine, but when I put it in gear, it came back. Car got me home fine, but noise is still there. I took a video, but not sure how to post on here. I put the transfer box in neutral and went through the gears and no noise. Car is a 2003 discovery 2 metropolis. Any help or advice much appreciated.

Can you put it in neutral and coast to see if the noise is still there?
Could be brakes, U/J, gearbox, transfer box. Don't know if it is auto or manual but assuming manual. If manual could be thrust bearing (althiough that usually only makes a noise when the clucth is depressed) or the bearing in the flywheel whose technical name escapes me for the minute.
But I would seriously put it up on axle stands and turn all the wheels first, as it started just after you put the brakes on. Could be something as simple as a stone trapped against a disc, or a brake pad worn through and stuck to the disc.

It’s an automatic mate. The drive seems to be ok, just the screaching noise. Like I say, I took a video but not sure how to post.

At the bottom of the "reply" box is a paper clip next to the words "attach files" so upload it from wherever you have saved it.
 
From what I been told it sounds like the transfer box is shot. Another lad had same noise and turned out to be that.

Right, when I came home I decided to drain the oil in the t box. It all came out clean, no metal deposits or material. Then drained the oil out of the auto box and again, clean with no contamination or metal deposits. I would have thought I would have seen something, but nothing. Bloody landrovers. Baffled now.
 
Update on my landy. Finally had some decent weather and took the transfer box out. Took it to work, cleaned it and took the covers off and found brass shards in opposit end to handbrake assembly. Can’t see where it has come from though. When I got home I went underneath the car to look at the auto box output shaft and found play in it, is this normal?
