So, I’ve got the engine in place and fitted the petrol pump, carburettor, starter motor, solenoid, distributor and a few other bits and pieces.
After checking the engine oil level, I took the plunge to see if I could get her to start. The battery was a bit flat, so I hooked up starter cables to my other car. On turning the ignition key, I only got a click/clonk-sound out of the starter/engine. I tried a few times, but no luck. I then tried igniting a few times in rapid series, which led to a sound as if the engine was turning a little, but then there was a bit of smoke coming from the starter motor, so I stopped. I then tried putting the jumper cables directly on the starter, which resulted in the same clonk as before.
I am thinking that it’s either a bad starter motor (which I might have time to check tomorrow) or there is something impeding the turning.
The engine can be turned manually, but it requires using a crow bar through the dog bolt. It is too hard to turn which just my hand (the required force is the same now, with the engine in place, as it was when it was on a pallet).
Engine is S3. Gearbox is S2A. Clutch plate and pressure plate is S2A. Flywheel S3. Starter - not sure.

Have you tried turning the engine with the starter handle? As Steve says, smoke from the starter is a bad sign. First step is to see if the engine is seized or seizing. Put it in 4th and try pushing it with a mate.

I’m an idiot.
Hadn’t fastened the other end of the grounding braid to the block. Just shoot me.
Thanks for the tips though, guys! That fault finding section will surely come in handy later on...
