Hi I am new to this form and was wondering if anyone has had this same problem before.
I have a 1993 200tdi manual Disco and although it goes ok I noticed today that it wont select the low box I checked the linkage and it is still connected, the difflock light comes on when you move the lever to the left but otherwise it is like stirring a bowl of soup, for a better description, I havn't used the low box for a few months now but the last time I used it it was OK. The lever also seems to travel a lot farther than it used to. Any ideas are welcome

I'm no expert on Landys, would like to be one day.. :) Try this, its in the LR manual, with the ratio selector on neutral try putting into gear and slightly letting the clutch out then press clutch back in and then try to engage the low ratio then, it worked for me as mine would not engage, its sweet now, try to change it about twice a week, I engage low and diff lock it when in car parks waiting for my better half...:D
 
I had a similar problem with a Discovery. The high / low lever felt "sloppy" and would not engage low range. It would shift out of high into "neutral" - Ie no drive - but would not engage low ratio at all. The external linkage was all intact etc. and I was preparing for an expensive internal fix. Any way the long shot was it turned out to be a grub screw loose on the selctor rod which I tightened, loctited and peened the end over so it wouldn,t happen again. I had to remove the center console from inside the vehicle to gain access but no box removal! Might be worth checking this before setting off down the expensive route.

Follow the linkage down from the lever and, going by memory, it enters the casing through a bolt on cover, the grub screw / selector was in there.

Thanks for the replys I was thinkong it could be the grub screw on the selector as I cant select neutral either will take a look at it tomorrow and see what I can do. Is the gearbox cover easy to com off? :)

well I had a go over the weekend to fix my gear box but failed. Got all the inside stuff of with no problems but when it came to remove the 6 bolts holding the selector fork cover on they were so tight that 2 of them (the farthest away ones) rounded :mad: and that was using a single hex socket. So I think I will have to live without the low box, never go off roading any way, unless I take the gear box out. Thanks to all who helped

i had a go at mine the other day the same thing someone befor me has had ago and tryed to drill out the two closest bolts but have not done a very good job fools so if any one out there could tell me wot the best tool for the job would be to cut them off may be i would be great full thanks alot

I can select low fine but should there be a light on the dash controls for when it goes into low or is it for diif lock only?
New to disco HELP!!!
 
Hi from memory you only get a light for diff lock to remind you to take it out so not to wind transmission up you will know when you have left it in low when ernie the milkman goes by with his horse and cart again,cheers tiga
 
I gather that you have a standard transmission; if it were the automatic I would suggest the following as it has worked for me:

get the vehicle rolling in a straight line - no more than 5mph - then sellect into low from there - it worked for me on a couple of occasions - and now the low setting is not so hard to acquire. I came to realize that with a Landy's low selection and even diff lock the motto must remain "use it - or lose it."

This does sound more like a linkage problem though.
