I fear I may have the same problem with mine. I just bought a used '08 TDV8 Vogue. It's done 65k miles and I had the same problem driving it home from the indie dealer. The box seemed fine during the test drive a couple of weeks ago but I didn't drive the distance I did today. The dealer was a long way from my home (I live in Germany) and after about 60 miles, most of which was on the motorway, it displayed ENGINE SYSTEM FAULT along with a beep and I suddenly couldn't accelerate. The revs were willing but the box wasn't. I stopped off of the motorway and after starting again it shifted fine so I went back on the motorway but after about 40 miles or so the fault appeared again with the same symptoms. From a standstill it seemed to shift up twice but no more. It wouldn't go much more than 30mph. As I still had a long way to go I opted for a tow home.

Does the fault message correspond to the symptoms? The fuel gauge was playing up during the trip at the same time so I wondered if it might refer to that but I thought that didn't sound right. After going around a couple of tight roundabouts the fuel gauge started working properly. Maybe it was sticking after having spent a long time on the dealer's forecourt??

Lucas Transmission Fix did wonders for my gear box, datatek had good result too, takes 300 - 500 miles before you really feel it,
it felt like i had far to many gears i.e. flared all over but now its smooth as silk, no saying it sorts your problem but maybe worth a go,
change filter and add a bottle with ATF refill.

This BMW "Filled for Life" is nonsense, look how hard it is to find a BMW used Auto Gear Box - mission impossible - sealed for a very short life...
I would break that seal before its a sealed piece of scrap.

Could it be that the vehicle was serviced after you did the test drive and they have failed to get box oil level correct (or are they sealed for life units? I'm not familiar with L322).

They where originally stated to be "filled for life" but this statement was soon withdrawn after Landrover realised they made a fk up in there designs !

Of course oil needs renewing !!! What were they thinking !?!?

BMW still insist its sealed for life on my now gone X5 - plonkers! Change the G/B instead of oil...

Changing the oil apparently doesn't exist in their system & refuse it could be a problem, thats at a main dealer... But we could sell you a brand new car, think not.

This thread is not exactly filling me with confidence for any future plans to upgrade my P38 to an L322. I might even go for a biscuit tin 90 at this rate! Actually I do like the idea of that :p

Mate i have to say this
At the start of this thread i stated all the problems i had with my L322 td6.
i had a P36 before that was a wonderful car with its normal problems,
Moving up to the L322 was a natural progression
i would never tell anyone not to have one
It was and still is by far the best car i have ever had
They are truly stunning to sit in and drive all the people that oowned one will tell you the same.
it what make you smile in the morning and gave me a reason to get up and goto work.
i will have another some day, just with the mother of all warranties to go with it.
i now have a td5 Disco ES its a nice car and runs fantastic but its nothing like the Range rover.
Just look out when you buy one for the box being replaced and long with any other problems itÂ’s had, the chances are i had a duff one of the line made on a Friday afternoon at 4pm in Land Rover (lol)

Can someone help please? If my gearbox oil is low and the filter possibly blocked in my 1996 diesel Range will it cause a lack of acceleration and will it leak out from anywhere onto my drive like it just has?

Your car is a P38, this thread is about the L322. Your car has the ZF4HP22e gearbox, the L322 Td6 has a GM gearbox, not the same.
Low oil will cause a lack of acceleration, leaks can be from many places, oil cooler pipes being one possible place.

My case was perhaps misleading. Took mine to my local LR dealer and they dumped the fault log and found one relating to the sensor on the turbo intake tubes. They removed them after removing the engine cover to find the ends hidden by the cover were oily. Sure enough, the left one had tear in it on the underside. They replaced both there and then. They said the error could have caused the limp home if the sensor detects the turbo isn't getting enough pressure in order to protect the engine. I drove it to work on the motorway and back today and it seems fine now but I may not know for sure until I do a longer journey.

Good to hear, like you say, probably the best way to approach ownership is to have a warranty that would cover the big stuff... would be interested to know if they do pay up (anyone?)
