hi guys, im new to this forum and new to landy ownership, a Disco TD5 (although have had them in the family for a while).

i am just wanting some reasurance really on me diagnosing my fault correctly before i go spending my hard earned

i beileve my in tank fuel pump has let go, i was driving back from 100 mile round trip, slowed down for a roundabout and when exiting it started showing slight misfire syptoms and about 15 secs later would misfire at anything above 40mph or on a hill etc where you had to use a more moderate throttle. it starts spot when its hot or just now at stone cold, ive checked the injector wiring and ecu wiring for condition, continuity and oil, all was ok and no signs of oil anywhere in wiring or ecu plugs and i believe it has had the better replacment wiring fitted, also the oil doesnt look diluted with diesel around injectors.

then i realised when i put the ignition on i couldnt hear the tank fuel pump priming, so i fired it up and still no pump. ive checked the pump plug and it is realy clean inside and im getting power supply and a spot on earth

which leads me to beleive my pump has gone, im pretty sure of it but i would like some second thoughts if anyone thinks ive missed something

thanks in advance, James

thank you very much for the offer, but your about a couple of hours away from me, im in Hull and dont quite fancy running down there doing 40mph lol it would take more like 3-4 hours
but again thanks for the offer its much appretiated

it sounds like the pump to me too...if you want to make sure get hold of a gauge and measure the fuel pressure at the exit of the regulator(FPR)... or you can unscrew the fuel temp. sensor from the FPR and meassure there... around 4 Bar is what you must get if the pump is good

Hi James.

I'd say your logical fault finding is spot on.

New pump will sort you out.

Out of interest, how many miles you on ?. They tend to go between 80 and 100 k.

Cheers.

Does the engine start first time every time ..? And does it idle good ..? If so I'd say your pump is fine they normally fail where it won't start or gives poor starting ... If it misses at about 2500 rpm do a search for missfire at 2500 rpm loads a different faults on the td5 for that ( even tho you have checked a few ) if it misses when driven of a search for td5 missfire loads a faults for that .but normally found to he a injector fault .. Hope this helps. ...

Thanks for all the help guys. in responce to a couple of questions. i havent measured fuel pressure as yet as ive not got a fuel pressure gauge, the disco has 130. 000 miles on it and the reason i swayed away from the injectors is i cant hear the fiel pump priming anymore. i checked my step dads disco and as soon as i switched the ignition i could hear the pump was working. it starts fine and idles slighly rough but only that slight that i might be feeling a problem thats not there becaise im looking for faults, its past 2000 ish revs where i get problems but i can potter about no probs under light load

cheers

bennys not right on that, I had the same problem, would start and idle fine but put it under load and it would miss fire. If the injector loom had oil in it the missfire would be there all the time even at idle. I tried to drive mine home but at less then 40mph had to pull over to let the queue past and it gave up altogether, a new fuel pump sorted the problem . The only one I could get a short notice was for a 110 but it fits in the tank and the fuel gauge reads true.

Sounds like a fuel pump - I had the same problem at about 125,000 miles. The way I found out to test the pump was to switch ignition on and listen for sound of priming - no sound, just like yours. Then when the engine is running try to get the revs over 2500, if the fuel pump's knackered the revs will be fine to about 2000, but won't go to 3000.

If it is the pump, when you change it forget the Haynes instructions on removing seats, trim etc - absolute waste of time. The flap covering the pump is in the middle of the boot area towards the back - cut a neat flap in the carpet and you'll be able to access it much more easily.

I bought a pump off ebay - generic one for about £90. The problem with it was that the sensor was cheap, so the reserve light would come on while there was a good 20+litres left in the tank. Lots of faffing about and I went for a genuine LR pump - twice the price, but the sensor is made by Siemens.

I compared the sensors on both pumps and the siemens ones had more contacts that went further through the range of the float travel - basically the cheap one measured about 80% of the tank, whereas the LR one measured 100%.

Definitely recommend the LR pump - and you'll need to buy a gasket for it as well - typical LR that these don't come with it. It's an extra £12. At least its a good way to tell the genuine LR parts.

A genuine LR pump will say it's manufactured by Siemens and will cost just over £200 off ebay, like this one LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2 TD5 FUEL PUMP WFX000280 | eBay

Good luck
