Hello everyone, just bought myself a Rangerover 2.5 dse on a 1997/r. Its got 200k on the clock. I picked it up today 200 miles from home and got a whole 50 miles before i had to call the RAC :mad:. It was driving lovely on the M6 when it started jerking around and hesitating. I pulled straight off and into the services and before i managed to even park up, it cut out and wouldnt restart. RAC man managed to start it eventually by jumping it off the front of his van. It ran a little rough to begin with and then seemed smooth as when i bought it. No fault codes were registered on his diagnostics whatsoever. His best guesss was a fault with the in tank lifter pump?? Anyway, i decided to carry on my way and it drove perfect again untill i decided to put my foot down and hit the kick down. I lost lots of power and there was lots of black smoke out the back when putting the engine under load, i.e, up hill or accelerating. I managed to get all the way home and now need your advice please as to what to check for??

it was a Tesco garage :doh: It seems like i have no turbo pressure at all now though. Anything other than mild acceleration causes loads of black smoke out the back and no power whatsoever. It would barely get to 70mph on a flat and 50 uphill. Im going to check for split pipes etc in the morning

go find yourself a shell garage and get a drivers club card and never go anywhere else. Mine does **** mile if i go anywhere but shell, and if you've run out and the nearest garage is a JET garage. park the bloody thing up walk home get a can then walk to the nearest shell garage...DO NOT ENTER THE JET GARAGE!!!

I should take it to a shell garage tomorrow fill it with V Power and put some redex in it to dilute the crap diesel. take it for a little run and see how much it recovers. i put 20quid in from JET, got half a mile down the road and the the injector light came on and it wouldn't go above 35mile an hour foot flat to the floor. but went and filled it with shell and he came back to normal within about 3-4mile.

how can the fuel make that much difference? 35mph flat to the floor? did it also smoke like mine does too?

Could be the top rubber intercooler hose.
When this hose is old, and especially when warm, this hose contracts/collapses under load, creating a major restriction of air. then you get heaps of black smoke and bugger all power.
 
not being funny but if it ran fine for the first 50mile what changed apart from the fuel you put in. when did you put fuel in and when did it start playing up.
yes it does make a difference what fuel you put in. before you start pulling your range rover apart i would just try the fuel. pipe and hoses don't suddenly cause a problem, and if they did you wouldn't have been able to start it again.
 
thanks for the suggestions guys, keep them coming. The top intercooler hose is very very soft. I'll start here. It just seems strange it was absolutely fine untill i hit the kick down at 70mph. Ill start with the obvious like split hoses, loose connections etc

i put the fuel in about 500 yrds from the sellers house.
 
i would go put some fuel cleaner and put some good diesel in it first before stripping everything down and making more problems for yourself. If you start taking hoses off and disturbing seal and clips without replacing them with new your asking for leaks and problems. :)
 
check all pipes rubber hoses,when was the fuel filter last changed also the air filter,the black smoke is just unburnt fuel so check all the fuel/air system.
 
Honestly, all this talk of fuel is such BS it's unreal. You really do have to becareful who you choose to listen to on forums.

You may as well go and ask your granny and see what she recommends.

Start with easy stuff, new fuel filter and leak off pipes. Get the fuel pump checked.

The seller may well know what the problem is!

Everyone on the forum speaks from there own experience... Don't rubbish others suggestions!

And if you don't think that fuel really makes a difference please read the posts on my thread "poor quality diesel"

In a free world everyone is entitled to their opinion so this is mine. I've often thought about feeding the 'Old Cow' hi grade oil but to date I've never had any issues with my current supplier (Tesco) I've put in 1000s of litres and never had any issues.

Having said that of course I've never driven her when filled with a different diesel, I feel an experiment coming on. It'll be due a 'feed' at the end of the week.
