What sort of handbrake do you have ?
A lever or direct entry type ?

ps.
Am just about to put my 28D up for sale ...

I have a 2001 td5 I would assume it’s just a lever but I don’t know someone else will be able to tell me

I think you need to have a good look at it first.

Do you have a ramp ?
Have you got the mats out and the seatbox covers removed ?
I took my tunnel out too (which isn't stricktly neccessary, but does make life easier).

Yes I have lift, I have had a look at it. The only thing that’s wrong is the seals so no need to upgrade or change anything. It’s all tight no play in anything. So can just drop the transfer box out the bottom like you said

What seals do you need to replace? usual suspects are front and rear out put seals, pan gasket and intermediate shaft O ring. The first three can be done box in position. And even the O rings on the intermediate can be renewed by moving box back some.

Yes but is that oil coming from front out put being blown back along box or something else. A good clean up and then check where fresh is coming from is the way to go.

Bit of progress today ...
Gearbox and support in ...

GearBoxIn.jpg

Finally got there this weekend.

fitted-2.jpg

Fitted the transfer box connected everything back up ..
Started the engine.

Cried ......

Still rattling like a rattly thing in a rattly place.
Put foot on the clutch (which feels great BTW) and - silence.
Take foot off and Mr Midget (with a tin can full of spanners - sounds like Roses, could be Quality Street ?) starts shakin.
It changes with gear and revs..

Buggeration.
Still I should be able to get it all apart easily ...

What release bearing are you fitting? I have found that even when brand new the HD metal ones like to have a bit of a rattle. As annoying as it is I have learned to live with it, as although the plastic ones start quiet they quickly rattle as well and then fail sooner!

I second that on the release bearing noise - have had them done at least 5 times and they all are noisy within 5000 km

But it was a dry wining sound - not rattily

The one supplied with the LOF kit ...

I've bought a new relase bearing guide (FTC5218) as the one in the car is the older alluminium one (FTC1271) which I did see a bit of wear on.

If that doesn't work, i'll be in the corner, on the phone to Winchester or Ashcroft, weeping ...

If the noise comes and goes with the clutch pedal (when stationary) 1st Motion shaft bearing/ layshaft bearings. The mainshaft is not rotating when stopped, so can't be making the noise. Gearbox overhaul time????

Yes, that was my conclusion, the layshaft bearing has died.
Refurbed gearbox on order from Winchester gears.

I would have bought from Ashcroft but they are an arrogant bunch and recently sold me a refurb bolt kit (for £33) which was missing 1 bolt and supplied with 8 that didn't fit ... (see post #2 this thread).
