Hi all, finally brought a well looked after and very well serviced 51 plate td4 gs with 116k on the clock,I am just finding my feet in it, happy so far but only done 300 miles yet everything seems to be ok so far. Gulp!!! just a few questions? tyres seem fairly new and evenly worn, but I can still hear a very slight drone is this normal ( starting to sweat as I'm typing) also on full lock in both forward and reverse it seems a little stiff ( keep looking to see if I've left handbrake on slightly) someone said that's just 4 wheel drive ( sweating more now) also the clutch seems quite high up at biting point, but seems ok and is comfortable, apart from the squeaky pedal. very pleased to have you guys on here and finding the knowledge all you experienced landy owners are sharing a great learning experience. thanks in advance. Now expecting the first reply to be BURN IT!!!!

If you're anticipating being told to burn it, you've obviously had a look around this forum already.

So have you checked out all the info on threads about the VCU and about the newest tyres going on the rear?

If not - do it now before it self-combusts. Watch out for the tratter-boys getting home from the pub or from settling down the pig for the night! :D

You bought the best engined model :) the 4wd system can feel slightly tight because of the VCU when reversing on full lock although my 1998 1.8 will reverse on full lock with no throttle. Try testing the VCU using Hippo's video -

Difficult to say what the drone is, could be VCU bearings, a wheel bearing or diff.
 
Thanks so much guys, yes I have read most posts and I will certainly be checking out all the vcu posts and videos. I have read the info about newest tyres on the rear, but tread depths couldn't be closer all round to be honest it is going into my regular garage Wednesday for them to give it a good looking at and it does have 3 months 5 star warranty on it from the dealer who I know well ( I will wait now for all the experienced landy owners to stop ****ing themselves at that last comment-----------and now continue) I think this forum will prove invaluable in the next few years/ months/hours / minutes. thank you all F+D
 
one thing with a desiel engine KEEP IT WELL SERVICED or you will suffer I do mine about every 12000 although Landrover say 20000 that includes all filters crank case engin and air filters use a good oil and it should last for ever
 
I too am new to the Freelander. I've now racked up just over 1,000 miles. I have learned a great deal from the gents on this site, thanks.
My advice would be to check all the levels regular, check the tyre pressures as these can have an adverse effect on the 4 wheel drive train and fuel economy. Fit the mods EGR valve, Crankcase Filter also add a little two stroke oil to the fuel. Then just drive it and stop listening for things that are not there or turn the radio up

I learned to drive on a Daimler with a pre-selector gear-box and a fluid fly-wheel.

Ah, those were the days.

Nostalgia is not what it used to be when I was younger.

Ah those were the days indeed, the old pre- selector box with the GCP if you got it wrong your knee almost hit your chin. Ferret, Saracen APC and the old Bedford RL that how I learned to drive
Nostalgic yes But I much prefer driving my Boxster and the gaylander
