Put a thermostat and gasket on landy 90 (200tdi) ran it for about 15 miles, temp gauge off the chart, looked under bonnet and water is pouring out of header tank at a rate of knots. Diagnosis by my mechanic mate (after testing the thermostat) is that its not opened up leaving the water nowhere to go, leading to hgf. Am gutted, thought by buying an original landy part I would get some quality. Am obviously going to get them to replace the faulty therm but does anyone reckon I could have further comeback on the dealer that sold me the part?? I.e they're liable for my hgf or is that a real long shot??:(

fair enough:) unless current vehicle parts often genuine or oe are poorer than should be i find it often, you can try but youd be lucky to prove not your fault as with all these things

Why did you need to change your stat in the first place?

If it was overheating before you changed it, you might find that you may have a circulation problem elsewhere!

Try leaving the stat out for a while and see if you get the same overheating and blowback through the header.

You will not do it any harm by leaving it out for a few days. You will find that it takes a bit longer for the engine to heat up, but by and large that's OK.

You really would be lucky if they did compensate you for anything other than the new thermostat!

They would just say you should have noticed a problem by the temperature gauge showing a higher reading than it should.

Good luck with the fix though!

what make was the faulty stat? I have a feeling we may already be able to guess.:(

I'm going to guess Britpart!
Personally I've never had an issue with their products, but I've heard a lot of negative comments!

It was straight from lr dealer so am assuming it was OE, took it back yesterday and he said 'this looks second hand' so i replied well it is as you sold it to me last week and I put it in my landy for 20 miles! He eyeballed me and asked me for the box it came in, told him Id chucked it. Then he put another thermostat in front of me took the old one off me, rang me in the afternoon to tell me they'd tested the therm and it worked. Told him somebody was making a mistake as my mechanic had tested it and it didn't open, basically then hung up on me. Wont be going there again, they do have a bad rep but thought I'd give them a try. Lesson learned. Head is now nearly off landy and we'll see what the damage is tonight. I didn't bother trying to put blame on them for hgf so thanks for the advice chaps.

I wouldn't have let then keep the dodgy thermostat as you no longer have any proof in the event of a claim.
