With a limited budget would it be best to get a cheaper new mig or a better quality mig welder but secondhand for the same money?.

Your thoughts please.

i'd go with good second hand with a view to repair some bits n bobs

but it depends what's available in your area.

I just got me a Clarke151te.
With 15% off coupon.

I haven't welded before, but I seem to get along with this one ok.
Been practicing loads though!!!

got to say your welds look pretty good for your first time. :)

I had a few Mig100s, Sealey, Snap-on etc but decided I needed more penetration;) so I used the Machine Mart discount voucher and bought a Clarke 165 gas mig. Only criticism is the shroud is held on by a coil of wire but the mig 100s had screw on shrouds. Go for 150Amp + and buy 2nd hand but see it working first. I think there is a thread about this if you search.

I used to have a Clarke but luckily a secondhand ESAB came in at the local secondhand shop.... owner had no idea so ended up selling it to me straight away complete with a new full size argoshield and reg for £100 if I took it away there n then.... so a 200 amp £1700 welder for a snip :) bonus... and its so much better to have a pro mig wish id upgraded years ago.... saves a fortune as well :)

cheers steve

Our son had a couple of small machines, but the reels of wire were expensive and the wire feed abysmal.

We ended buying a full-size Oerlikon 250A machine for £250.

Paid its cost many times over on Landy Series chassis repairs and bits and pieces on our display engine trolleys.

Best of all it takes 15kg reels of wire which are stupidly cheap compared with the 1kg reels.

We have four wire sizes that we use and the nozzles to suit.

Note that the bigger single-phase machines need more than a 13A socket to run, ours runs off a 32A socket in the workshop.

We use a full-size cylinder with it.
