After I got my new MOT pass certificate in me hand recently I quizzed the tester about several things. He had spotted that the EGR was 'missing' when he was inserting the oil-temp probe. No problem having a by-pass. Not needed for a diesel test. No doubt I'm throwing out some nasty gasses - but they are not tested for. The tester at the start selects petrol or diesel and the computer does the rest.

However he cautioned me about completely removing the cat as the new rules coming in 2012 say that if the vehicle had a cat when 1st registered, it needs to have one when tested. I asked what test for the cat was coming and he winked and said "Only a visual one, we will not be checking on what's inside the box."

I'm nursing a rusty exhaust through the Winter and intend getting rid of the cat innards when I fit a new system in the Springtime.

Was it a new style certificate? My new one issued today is a printout on a sheet of A4 paper. The idea I suppose is to overcome the stealing of the old style blank certificates.
The left hand side of the A4 gives the vehicle details and dates, etc. The right hand side is for advisories. No figures for emissions anywhere. My advisory was worn front brake pads.

Yes - that's the new 'Certificate' - real cheapo -A4 printed on the test station bog standard printer.

Loads of people will question this 'advancement' until it becomes common knowledge that'll take a year I guess. The only improvement I can see is that the advisory info is on the same bit of paper -better for buyers not sellers.

As well as avoiding the stolen blank problem my guy said that this change was because all the info goes straight from his computer to some central computer somewhere or another linked to the Vehicle Licence dudes along with your insurance confirmation.

Big Brother is alive and well and living in Swansea.

That system is what happens in France. The vehicle is on a nationwide database and the information can be pulled up at any testing station. (controle technique). Advisories are printed out on each test even if the remedial work has been done.
We have a test every 2 years after the vehicle is 4 years old and the testing stations only test vehicles, they do no subsequent work on them.
The best thing about the french system is that a sticker is placed on the windscreen to instantly show that it has a current test certificate. We also have an insurance sticker to prove current cover.
We don't, of course have any road tax disc as we don't have road tax. ;)

I started this thread to explore what folks know about these new proposals. I'm hearing rumours about cats, headlights, aerodynamics, chips, boxes and non standard ECU mapping. :(

This is either scaremongering or the biggest problem for years.

Anyway it's all due to kick off in January.

I just got a new MOT cert myself a couple of weeks ago, but anyone who needs to have a test in Jan or Feb might be well advised to get it tested early.

Comments, please.

just had mine tested , egr bypass and de-cat. sailed through, though now you have mentioned that i will not be throwing out my catted exhaust system just yet will have to wait and see. Thanks for the info on this.
