Right, I have more questions! Been reading about the EGV and about plating it off.

1. Was it fitted purely to recycal emmissions?
2. Will it pass the MOT?

Yes.

IT was a silly theoretical idea intended in theory to reduce oxides of nitrogen in the exhaust. Like, WHO CARES? Apparently Californians did as the Los Angeles smog was partly caused by nitrogen oxides. No one else should be the least bit interested in EGR.

It was claimed it reduced oxides of nitrogen by cutting DOWN the peak combustion temperatures in the cylinders. It did this by sending exhaust gas into the INLET manifold, thus cutting down the amount of fresh air (= oxygen) going in. Lower temperatures means lower pressures mean less power and less economy, FULL STOP. All sounds like a great idea so far, huh?

There are NO benefits to the normal user by leaving the EGR installed. It is all negative. Disable it or take it completely off.

It will not affect an MoT, and indeed the stuff the MoT analyser measures will probably be reduced with the EGR removed or disabled. The engine WILL run better, pull better, do lots more miles per gallon, and the exhaust will be cleaner.

And we all had to pay for the EGR kit when we bought our cars ....

Hi CharlesY,

Thank you, you have basicly confermed every thing that I have read and found.

Just actually need to do it now! Still trying to source tools. Hope to do it next weekend.

Hi,

Another quick question.

Is there an easy way of telling if the EGV has been plated already with out taking anything apart?

It has occured to me that if it has already been done then that is not the problem for the lack of power. If anyone could post pitures of what I should be looking for, that would be great. (Don't even go there Yella!!:D )

Cheers,

Will one of you sex mad landies please explain to this lady if she's got a EGR or not?

I am far too old and too far away to get a grip of her manifolds.

We won't mention a damned thing about how we grease our landies ...

The attached exploded jpg shows the EGR assembly.

The hose (18) runs from the exhaust manifold, around the front of the engine to the Air intake/EGR control valve(1). held onto the front of the engine between the fan and the block by (19)

On this hose look for bolt/s (8)

It is at this flange where the blank will sit, between the assembly and the exhaust manifold. If fitted there will be a metal plate between them. If not that's where you put it...

Thank you Battenberg. Slowly working my way through the Rave cd but have not found this bit yet!!! As I nearly stalled on a hill today (yet again!) I actually need to pull my finger out and get on with it.

Order one from ebay, it's a 10min job, about £5 and easy to do.

Squirt loads of WD40 or Plusgas on the bolts the day you order it, while you wait for it to arrive.

You will need only to remove the plastic top fan cowling which is 4 phillips screws, then get a mini ratchet with an extention and a 5 or 6 mm hex/allen bit in it (can't remember the size) to undo the two bolts. Drop the plate in between the two flanges and put the bolts back in. Do the bottom one first as it's the most fiddly....10mins later you will have a different car...!!

a normal allen key probably wont have the reach or the torque to get the bottom bolt.:)

Thank you, I have managed to source tools now, so hoping to do this sooner rather than later.

TRY DOING IT THIS WAY!

Once you have "cracked" loose both socket cap screws, back them both out a couple of turns, then remove only ONE of them, best the top one first. Apply copper-grease to the threads of the screw.

Use a small screwdriver to pry the two flanges apart just a little.

Slip the plate end first into the gap and line up the top holes using the socket cap screw or a pointy scewdriver, and then engage the screw into the threads 4 or 5 turns.

Now remove the bottom screw. The EGR plate will swing down. Move it as needed so the bottom holes are in line. Apply copper-grease to the threads of the screw. Now you can refit the bottom screw right away.

Now screw the bottom screw till it touches, then the top one the same, then tighten them both firmly. Brute force is not required.

The EGR plate will be all but invisible when you are finished.

ZZZZZOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM !

That is a good way of doing it. I wanted to get rid of the whole thing so made up a plate and fitted it on the manifold. Then I took the big pipe with the branch going to the EGR and sawed it off and welded a plate on it. Then plugged the vac hose and it was done. Trouble was without the EGR the bolts were too long and I didnt tighten it enough and blew the gasket after a couple of 100 miles. New gasket, some washers and its sorted.

Also remember the disco I has 2 fuel filters - one in the engine bay that you replace every year and another underneath near the fuel tank that you need to clean every year.

Confused? Where is the second filter? I have cross ref with the rave cd and manual, can not find any mention of a fuel filter near the fuel tank.

Thank you Big Phil, but its the fuel filters I am on about. Not only that I have a disco 300 Tdi, engine looks wrong!?

I have been told that there are two feul filters, one under the bonnet at the back which I have found, the over that is only asscessable from underneath near the fuel tank which I can't find?
