I noticed whilst reading through posts on here about shackles going through wind screens and not using shackles to join two strops together. well may I introduce to you all a solution?

I know that off roaders have cottoned on to the idea of using dyneema rather than wire rope, well you can replace the heavy, weak shackles with rope soft shackles like this

This is a 6mm (diameter of the rope) dyneema line spliced into a self locking, lightweight and easy to use shackle. It is rated to a breaking strain of 2 ton. I also have a 10mm shackle that is rated up to 5 ton!

Safe to use to join two strops and won't fly through the air like a metal shackle if the strop breaks!

You have my attention...

Ha ha there is a video online of how to make them, I'd recommended using a metre and half or two metre line to splice one as the halve in length as you feed one half through the other to form the strong loop. Dyneema is readily available from chandlers and ebay, I've been using English braids in the picture shown and it was ok to work.

Normal knots and hitches can reduce the strength of a rope to almost a half but this method ensures full strength.

Oh and after being put under strain the knot goes rock hard, hence why the tails are still on, once loaded up i will cut and heat seal the tails.

Thor has a great educated point, showing how intelligent he is.
By using those cinch bone things there is no chance of a shackle going anywhere near any glass etc.
Instead you have a stainless dog bone type item flying toward you!

Adding to Monkfish, if you are using all synthetic (rather than wire) its a great idea. If you were broken down in the wilds you may be able to use it as a snare for rabbits?

do i detect a touch of sarcasm there.:D:D

Not towards Monkfish and his shackle idea.
Sorry to say though I am still in the dark ages with wire rope on both my front and rear winches.

yes i realise who you meant ya daft bugger.;) if that works for you then thats ok,but for someone to post something on here that is just as dangerous as a flying shackle is just stupidity in the extreme.

Yeah, i don't see why not, the only problem is it may not be stiff enough to hold itself off the ground like wire would.

They there are not the same......,

That just stops the strap from pulling tight up to the tow hook, the soft shackle does what it says on the tin, it's a shackle.

MF.take no notice of what he posts,he knows nothing.

Ha ha i just wanted to take they there are the mick!

ok,but the item thor posted is just a lump of metal that goes through a loop but costs $15 +.why not just use a feckin heavy spanner etc and save the money.lol:rolleyes:

It only wieghs half a pound and 15 dorrar but tax would knock it up a bit.
Looks like a decent idea to me.

How much do the spectra/dymena jovvies work out at?

no idea, but that lump of ally will come through the windscreen just the same as a shackle.which is why the question was first asked.

True but half a pound is less than what any of my shackles weigh. I imagine it would have lower kinetic energy by the time it got to the windscreen than 2lb of steel would. ;)
