Hi all,

My 99 Freelander mk1 petrol needs new brake pads plus the disk behind the hub which protects the brakes is also very rusty and needs replacing. What is a reasonable price to pay at a local mechanic......not main dealer obviously.

Thanks.

I would reckon on 2 hours work, by a competent mechanic.

My local guys are happy if I buy the parts myself - that saves a packet. :D

Check the price of 'Green-Stuff' pads and discs from EBC Brakes - but there much cheaper bits on eBay.

Yours will be the earlier type - without vented discs - a bit cheaper than the TD4s.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, it wasn't the brake disks that need changing just the pads. I think that the things I referred to as 'disks behind the pads' which are rusty are stone guards or something similar.

So does anyone have any ideas on costs to replace front pads and disk guards?

My 1998 Freelanders disc back plates started to rust badly and bits of it were starting to rub against the disc, I just cut them off and the brakes are fine without the back plates.

mud shield/stone guards are best removed ,more often than not disc is worse on the guard side ,i mostly remove them

my 99 Freelander sheilds looked like new so i left em on.

my sis-in-laws Rav4s were rotten through so I snapped em off when i changed the disks and pads.

Freelaner,

I was going to right a comment on your latest signature strip addition, but I'm too tired at this time of a Saturday night to discuss Nietzsch!

So rather than get it wrong I'm going to say nothing!

"Das best order nichts." is a sound maxim.

If you buy the pads yourself double check the right ones, when i replaced mine the ones everyone told me were right were wrong app mine were fitted for only 14months and was only sussed when i took one for them to check over..

The original pads are handed, so you can get them the wrong way round.
the oems i bought were all the same so you don't have to faff getting them the right way round.

they were made by Pagid, good pads and reasonable price too.

I used pagid ones in mine, they seem to be good quality. OE on a lot of cars.
I'd only expect to pay 1.5 hrs labour for front discs and pads on a freelander. They're just bog standard brakes like most normal cars on the road, the electronics should make no difference to the quote so don't accept it as an excuse to up the price for a disc and pad swop!

it took me 45 mins to do the front, including cleaning the caliper slides and squeal shims.

nowt out of the ordinary

Very true but garage wants time for driving car in, putting on ramp, raising, drinking tea, doing job, road test, paperwork and phone calls:) they usually charge 45 mins just for pads.

I have just changed my front pads on my TD4 06 plate and I have changed many disc pads on many cars and I thought how easy it was to do do and how easy the calpers went back,
In all about Half hour each side.
Cost was £18.00 for both sets.

It's a doddle on a Freelander int it Bill ;)

New anchors fitted this week.
Green stuff pads about £32, Brit part vented, drilled and slotted £40.
