What about my standard callipers? Would they be Ok or would they let down the performance of the new discs/pads?

Standard calipers won't fit. The vented calipers have a spacer between the 2 sides thats about 1/2" thick.

Other than that they're exactly the same as my Disco 200tdi ended up with the later calipers but with the spacers removed on solid discs.

He was on about with the drilled and grooved solid discs instead of the drilled and grooved vented.

OK, to summarise...

Drilled and grooved solid discs like these below would fit my standard callipers.

But vented discs would require different callipers.

If im correct then I think I will keep my callipers and get the Paddocks Performance drilled & grooved solid discs.

You are right. Clean and paint calipers to protect them and fit solid discs and green stuff pads. I doubt you will ever experience heat fade.

Yep but don't spray the newly painted calipers with wheel acid and then steam clean em cos the paint gets washed off:eek:

Best brake upgrade you can do if you have drums on the back is to put discs !

I have a 200tdi & a TD5 and the difference Discs make on the back is mental.

You can make drums stop on a six pence but you have to constantly adjust the shoes and then all goes belly up when you fill em wiv mud !

Thanks for all the help. Ive placed an order with Paddocks for their Performance solid discs and EBC Greenstuff pads. The part numbers were initially confusing but for my 1996 110 I ordered the following...

vented discs are far Superior in stopping power, less heat fade would guess at least 50% better stopping power. At 60mph on a stop test you would stop 3-4 car lengths sooner

How does a vent the reduces heat provide greater stopping power? Merkin cars still use leaf springs and drums.

I'm new here and would like some help. I have a 1986 90 County on a galvanized chassis with a 1991 200tdi engine, and I suspect box and axles for the same donor, or at least the rear as it's discs. Everything's fine apart from the brakes and I really want to fit new discs, calipers and pads - I'm perfectly happy with solid, standard discs as my boy racer days are over, especially in this lump (my 5th Land Rover, the first being a 1951 series 1 back in 1968), so what I wanted to know was: are there very many calipers to choose from (ignoring the obvious difference for vented discs), from what seems like a vast array that's out there, or is it just basically one type for the front with 4 pistons and one for the rear with two?. I can only assume that it's for a 1991 Defender if those are the axles used, or the front might just be the original from the 1986 90. Is there any difference between the Defender and the Discovery (Yes I had one of those too and did rebuild the calipers and new discs on that but can't remember much about it now - that's old age for you!)
Many thanks, Muscavado

OK, so perhaps it's not the 1991 rear axle, but what ever it is it's got discs with split pin and flat spring retainers on the pads - anyone know what calipers it's likely to have and are there a selection (apart from the vented disc which I would not want to fit - if indeed it's an option anyway on the rear!). Or is there really only one option regards discs, pads and calipers? Many thanks, Paul
