surely its a simple case of original wheels on a facelift vehicle courtesy of a previous owner, its happened before!

The only way I can think this would work is if he had originally solid disks and pads, then fitted vented disks along with new pads meant for solid disks?

Don't you just hate it when people come on forums asking for advice and then you never here what the outcome was

Probably still outside trying to fix it:)

If it had early wheels fitted to nearly worn out brakes would they fit? The when nice new correct brakes are fitted they catch?
Thats whats happening.
Also the rear wheels don't sit right on the drums, the inside of the "spokes" of the wheel foul on the outer edge of the drum before the mating faces meet.
Someone on here had two rear studs snap becuause of it a few years back.

Hello,

Just changed the front discs and pads, all ok, put the wheel on cant move it as it is tight up against the caliper, all parts used are OEM.

The caliper appears to be approx 4mm outward, this happens on both sides!

Any thought please as very fed up at the mo!

Thanks:mad:

here's his original post, it says nowt about using a new set of wheels, nor does it mention swapping vented discs for solid or vice versa.

i aint got a clue what he's done.

but it can't be what i said in my last post, mainly cos it's impossible to do

Hi all,

APologies for the lack of communication, I've been scratching my head about this, queried Land Rover and a couple of specialists and as far as they can see there shouldnt be a problem.

TO recap, its a 2001 Freelander 1A....chassis, vented discs, original 16" wheels afaik, it was like this when I got it.

Have replaced 2 x sets of pads, (tried), 2 x sets of discs, (tried) however I cant see any difference, I have drawn them, measured and noted disc width, etc, no discernible difference.

One specialist I spoke to said that some OEM discs have a slightly difference face which mates to the hub flange, but again no difference that I can see.

Lost my rag the other day and knocked a fence panel off LOL!!

Any thoughts still

Its as if the pads are too thick as they determine the position of the caliper on the guide pins in relation to piston on the back of the inboard pad.

I've had the vernier gauge, inside/outside calipers, run out gauges all sorts to no avail!

I'm not going to take it to a garage tho1

Are you sure you got the right pads, and not ones for solid discs,as these will be slightly thicker than the ones for vented discs.

Has it had new pads before during your ownership?

Are you sure it hasn't previously had different wheels?

Its not had new discs and pads in my ownership before, and not sure about the wheels, believed to be all original!!

Do you know anyone nearby with a FL to try one of their wheels on it, sounds like pre 2001 alloy wheels on post 2001 car that possibly had steels when new.

It depends on your model, i'm not sure exactly which models come with steel wheels, people like to upgrade to alloys but the early alloy wheels don't fit Td4s.
