The clock in my dashboard doesn't have a light in it, so I can't see the time when it's dark. This bugged me so much, I made a replacement clock (3d Printed, Arduino driven LCD) . Oh, and I stuck some USB ports in there as well (they kick out a total of 3Amps, so enough to charge a new fangled smart phone).

It's a bit rough & ready, but at least I'll be able to see what time it is now.

Does it not just have a bulb in it that needed replacing?

Not that there's anything wrong with your solution. Horses for courses and that. Prefer analogue myself.

Swapping the bulb is easier, I fitted a red LED, makes the analogue clock very readable at night.
Analogue clocks can also be seen in bright sunlight unlike many digital displays.

Oh yeah, swapping the bulb is definitely easier.

That little circular cutout on the front is a light sensor, it goes pretty bright in direct sunlight so it's still readable.

Some people are just clever. Fantastic work around. @Grrrrrr I get what you mean about analogue. I'm a bit of a 'keep things original' type, but like you I appreciate clever solutions , to the factory failings
