Hey guys,

I am rebuilding a 300 tdi but i'm running into a problem.
I have taken out the crankshaft and pistons. Refitted with new bearings and rings.
When i put it back together without tightening the pistons to the crankshaft i can make the engine turn.
After i torque'd it up the engine is seized, doesn't matter how hard i try to turn it.

Old partnumber main bearing is ERC8841 and new ones are STC3395G.
I just bought std size figuring it would be std. But that seems to be the problem now.

So my question is: Am i right and did i get the wrong size ones or is something else going on?

you use oil or grease when you put the bearings on the rods and the crank? and oil the pistons and rings
 
if oversize it will be marked on back of shell bearing ie +10,slacken each one in turn, when you tighten a rod cap it you should be able to slide rod slightly to either side,are the numbers on cap and rod both on the same side , also did you gap rings in the bores before fitting to piston

Old bearings have no sign of +10 ect as far i could find.

Didn't gap the rings as i was told it wasn't necessary for this engine. But that wouldn't explain why the engine turns fine without torque'ing it up and doesn't move when it is torque'd up. Spacing in the cilinder doesn't chance?

you should allways gap rings each piston set to specific bore , it was whether new bearings were marked +10, have rods been off pistons

Does the crank turn when the main bearing caps are torques down but with the big end caps loose?
STC3395 is standard main bearing shells, what big end shells did you fit?
 
If i only tighten up the middle ones or the outer ones it still turns. So i have the feeling it is a fitment issue.
So all the new part numbers are:
Main bearing shells - std - AE STC3395G
Big end shells - std (con rod bearings) - AE RTC2993G
And i think i made an error in the discription, Main bearings are torque'd up.
It's about the big end shells in the connecting rod from the piston and the caps.
 
Are you sure it hasn't previously suffered a runaway or water ingress (hydro locked) and bent a con-rod? Alternatively pull the rods/piston out the block and try fitting them to the crank and see if they will spin when torqued up. If they don't then it is probably a shell size issue, if they do then you may have a bent rod or thrust bearing issue.
