Well after a few coolant issues mainly with pressurisation with my 2002 p38 i took the move to remove the cylinder heads had both heads off in about 7 hours being quite careful. on inspection the head gaskets are in good condition with no blowing to the water jacket. So my attention was then drawn to the block armed with a depth mic i worked around the block number six liner has dropped by about 40 micron also that piston is a lot cleaner than the others as if it was steam cleaned. Oh well the joys of the V8 got to find a new short engine now and then rebuild!

40 microns!
ferkinell - how did yer measure that? laser interferometery?
ah dunt think 40 microns makes ferk all difference.

40 micron = 0.04mm or just under 2 thou the problem isn't the depth it's the fact it has moved i.e the block has gone porous .Reading what i have read on net the only cure is a remanufactured block

Go for stepped liners! they will never slip, ever!

Get a price for machining and fitting top hat liners and it will be almost as expensive as a new short engine. I fitted a new short lump to a 3.9 Vogue some years ago and it clocked over 100K on the engine when I sold it-never had a problem with it. Last year put a short engine in my 4.6 and it's goin like a dream. Got the engine from Autopost in London. At the end of the day the choice is yours but liner/block problems are not as common as people think. Just make sure you have 50/50 mix of GOOD anti freeze and de-ionised water in the cooling system when you get it done.

my head is spinning (bit more than the v8 i surpose) not sure which V8 block to go for A new coscast block from rpi or a top hat block from others both claim to be the best!

The 3.9 engine was from RPI and was fine. The 4.6 was from Autopost and I have no complaints. Obviously the top hat liners will not move but in reality the chances of lightning striking the same place twice is remote. How many miles did the old engine do? was it regularly serviced and the anti freeze mix kept up to scratch before you had it? What is the price difference between the two? How long do you intend keeping the car, the body will probably give out before the new engine does if it is serviced and looked after. What do the rest of you guys think????????????????

i have only dealt with rpi once over the phone and i wasn`t impressed by the unhelpfull arrogant clown i spoke to .have you looked at these people Turner Engineering - Land Rover Engines Replacements and Remanufacturers are certainly not the cheapest option but, from what ive heard they are by far the best .rick.
