Stick to the rubber. I had chequer plate on my old 90. Bloody lethal when wet or muddy, damn sore when your shin or even your nuts make contact as you slide gracefully to the ground. :confused::eek:
 
I would agree with @Lionhound, wet metal is going to be lethal, the tread on chequer plate does not offer as much grip as you would think. If you don't like the rubber you could remove it and fit the anti slip sandpaper style tape. I have this on my tree sliders and it made a big difference getting in and out.
