I have a series II Discovery with a V8 that decided to go pop, I suspect a slipped liner and bought a replacement engine off Ebay.

I noticed this engraving on the top of the casting the gearbox bellhousing attaches to just behind the left side cylender bank.

Does anyone know what this means, has the block been reconditioned at some point?

looks more like sombody with a dremel going over bits making it harder if it gets stolen to move parts on by engraving id numbers on everything

Good point, thanks for that, I never thought of that possibility, hope the engine is kosher:(??

I have done a google search on the number with a negative result and it does not look like a LR chassis No.?? Anyone any other ideas?

up my way the scrapyards:eek: or vehicle dismantlers:) engrave their parts incase you go away and then come back and say the part was no good but you'v brought back a duffer they can then tell if it came from their yard.

Aaaaaha, that makes sense. I've just got finished fitting the motor and all the stuff that goes with it, just got the fluids to fill.Fingers crossed for a drama free start up as I'm on the Isle of Mull and the engine came from a breaker in Kent

good luck keep us posted is the weather as bad as here, its ****ing down and howling gales

Aye it has been here too, not good for working outside in a field. I got the engine running but need a new bottom hose before I road test it. Everything seems to be OK at present.

thats good it fired up hope the weather turns for you and mind and purge the air out the water system lol cheers.............

My 3.5 has the compression ratio engraved on it.

Could be anything though. Engine number???

Not the compression or engine No, they are stamped on the left side of the block between the exhaust manifold branches. Thanks for the reply though.
