Mate, ive got the exact same problem, last weekend I had the engine out again to check it over, cant find anything wrong, the reason I had it out is because I was worried it was the big ends, as I had mixed them up previously and wasnt 100% about them.
I've since matched them well, oil gap is within tolerance and I am happy with the rest of the build, but I still have the rattle!

wow re-build brothers, the course of landy ownership never runs smooth.

I have had new pistons fitted with new pins so I hope its not an issue as tbh I am unsure of the machine shops methods now having got my now defunct heads back in bits (nothing kept in order) after 9 weeks.

It will be interesting to see what the problem is before I embark on re-assembly!

no small end to renew, they floating pins.

what brand tappets did you fit?

Floating pin uses bush, press fit does not use bush.
Then did you keep the conrod and piston matched?
Did you dismantle the rocker shafts? and made sure they were assembled correctly?
Mate if you think I am probing to much just tell me to shut up....ok

Well I did mix the caps up but I'm pretty damn sure they are right as I checked the gaps. It's definitely bottom end

What....you mixed the conrod caps?? Waaaaa that is a bummer, you found your fault then. They are extremely precise. You are unfortunately going to remove the heads and pistons and conrods to sort this, the good thing is you don't have to remove the engine again.

I had ago at sorting them by feel before, wasn't right so I've since had it out and re-done them all and there good now as I've checked the oil gaps, but still the same rattle!

Right quick update, just undone all bug end bearing, no really bad ones. Only thing i could find is one has a scour mark

Hang on, I had to get my new pistons and pins pressed in at the machine shop but they still float about, just not enough to come out so what do you mean?

ben, re your pic, I doubt that would have caused the knock as the rest of the surface is intact.

Yeah im baffled , checked all torque settings aswell nothings shifted so done it all back up and was going to run it tonight to see but the key snapped! and me or my dad have thrown away the spare :/ going to get a few more cut tomorrow :(

The fact that the piston is floating on the wrist pin, is not a floating pin. The quickest way to determine which one you have is, do you have circlip's holding the wrist pin in tact then you have a floating pin, if no circlip's its press fit.

See easy peasy......... 😉

The score marks is a sign of dirt/machine swarf going through the engine. The shiny bits is contact with the crank.
I know you already assembled the engine but did you check the mains?

Yeah check mains last night aswell, or atleast bottom 1/2

Were they ok?
You are sure the noise is from the bottom of the engine? Did you by any chance try and push and pull on the big ends, did they feel solid, after you re fitted them.

No circlips and no bush, which should be the same as other rv8, hence no little end bush to change.
