Hi everyone
You may recall i was trying to confirm if i had hg failure on my recent purchase 2004 vogue the BMW M62 engine I have now had the time to investigate further and after stripping the heads off, one of the head gaskets had delaminated on the left bank. Removal of the top timing covers also revealed that the vanos guides were in very poor shape and the chain had worn part of the guide down to metal. So decided to remove entire engine and do a complete rebuild. Well engine is out and now time to rebuild

Fun isn't it? ;)

LOL

Very bad design in regards to the timing chain tensioner set up. , typical BMW and their planned obsolescence. ;)

If i were you i'd also clean out the oil distribution plates that feed the cam journals their oil,

A good blast of brake clean to force out any gunk..

Timing the M62 is a pain in the arse but all info is in my Sig ;)

Oh oh also make sure you re-prime the tappets before installation, well i say make sure,,

You don't have to it just prevents that horrible clatter when they're dry..

To be honest at this moment in time i am enjoying working on this engine and a first for me, but nervous when the time comes to setting the vanos up. Thanks for the advice HB

Vanos is a pain and takes a while but it is possible, once you've watched a few videos and read a few guides. ;)

Timing the m62 with the right timing tools is nothing to worry about but watch it through complete on YouTube a couple of times.
The only thing to be concerned about with the m62 is the condition of the bores, everything else is fixable :)

Thanks for that advice much appreciated i do have concerns about one bore  but as a backup plan i have a donor block

Among the mountain of invoices for work the previous owner had done it seems the head gaskets were done back in 2016 at a cost of over 2k

Have you got any fots of the suspect bore?
If the backup block is good and no liners then I’d be tempted with the new block.
Make sure you change the little non return valve in the block and clean out the oil way.
