Hi Everyone,

Just bought myself a 2.5 DSE Range on a T plate i love it although like most second hand cars has a few things that are noticable and would liek your help please.

Firstly over 60 mph which i aint done to often it has a slight vibration and passenger seat wobbles a bit any ideas what this is. Its annoying more than anything, and never noticed it on the test drive cos never went over 40mph.:confused:

Computer on dash says LH window not set etc for each window other than drivers whats this all about the beep does my head in everytime someone opens the window.:confused:

Any advice and help would be most appreciated.
 
On the vibration, check out that your wheels are clean (particularily on the inside) and balanced (if you're getting them balanced ensure they are well cleaned before you do) and check that your drive shafts are in good order. These are two of the most common sources of vibration. If these don't sort it then there is a whole series of things, some not so easy to fix, which may be the source of the problem.

On the 'windows not set' issue, this happens everytime the battery goes flat. Get out your owners manual and there is a section in this on sorting it out. Its essentially put the windows fully up and down in one continuous action.

Was gonna leave the wheel balancing till last thats the easiest thing to do

I got a very good piece of advice a while back from Chas one of the other members here when I suggested I was going to do something similar, He said:
Fix all the known problems before going looking for others.

A very true piece of advice here.

Out of balance wheels are a well known cause of vibration in the 50 to 60 mph range in all vehicles, particularly the rear ones. If you've ever off roaded in sticky mud conditions you'll never forget what dirty wheels can do once you hit the road.
I really would advise you to go through the following order until you find the source:
1. Power wash the wheels thoroughly
2. Get all 4 wheels balanced
3. thoroughly check both driveshafts (i.e. jack up an axle or preferably remove one end of both)
4. Check the VC a best you can while a shaft is off
5. Check the diffs for excessive play

At this stage you've done the easy things and you're into the technical stuff, is it the engine or driveline? Try getting it up to vibrating speed knock it into neutral and switch off the engine (straight road obviously:rolleyes:), if the vibration disappears you're into engine flywheel territory, if its still there you know its driveline and as you've done the easy stuff I'd seek help cause you've got either diff or gearbox/transfer box problems.

But definitely start with the wheels:p
 
Hi.

My P38 did the passenger seat thing and it was the front drive shaft which had the minutest play in (i thought) but turned out to be no good. It cost me around fifteen pounds from the dealers but i had a 99 T plate with removeble joints on the drive shafts. Apparently the later ones don't.

Do check all of the other things though and it may be dirty wheels etc but i have to say that i went through all of the things listed by this good site but it turned out to be the above.

As for mucky wheels the old girl hasnt been off road in her life by the looks of her but i am taking the wheels off tonight and jet washing them off allround and giving them a good scrub then its off to be balanced tomorrow.
Whilst wheels are off i am going to look at the above mentioned and hope its somet easy

Hi Guys,

Have done the turn it off whilst in a straight line and the vibration still there so assuming it is driveline issue,, gonna have to wait till the weekend to investigate further as work gone busy

wheels are clean and going for rebalance today
 
What wheels have you got on it, also have you sorted your windows, if not just turn the ignition on hold the window button down till the window's all the way open then all the way up and hold the switch in the close position for 5 sec's and it should say window set, job done repeat on all window and sunroof if you need to.
 
Well at least you have isolated the engine as not beeing the source. Thats good news!

If its not balancing I'll put my money on a drive shaft
