ok, so i sold my old l series last year for some unknown reason after sorting all the problems out. but since selling it ive wanted another one, was looking for another l series but came across a 2005 se td4 in good condition, it has got 150k on the clock but its just had new injectors,turbo, head gasket, glow plugs. got a brand new tow bar on her and 10 months mot. she goes well and i am very happy with it. suffering with the 2k rpm lumpyness and smoking at the minute but i havent really had a good look at all the pipes and hoses. did find the clamp on the egr valve was hanging off so thats been put back on.

plan to remove the egr completely anyway and eventually either a ron box or a remap. anyway i think i had a good deal as i only paid £1500!

That's a good price and less than I paid for my bargain priced 05 SE auto back in January. That's a lot of car for the money. Heated front screen too ;)

I was looking at yours this morning, very nice motor. yes ive heard the heated screens are a few quid to replace?

Headed screens cost £75 excess to replace.
However if you didn't have it from the factory, then it's an expensive retrofit. I specifically wanted the heated front screen and automatic. It just so happens that my Freelander SE came up for sale locally last November. It was up for sale for £3,250 so took a look at it then, but it had a few to many age related marks on it for me at that price so I left it. I noticed that it still hadn't sold by January so I gave him a cheeky bid of £2,300 which he took. It had what I wanted and the rest is history as they say. There's a few bits that need doing and there's no history with it but I don't mind. I expect I'll be it's last owner anyway. I'm going to do some improvements to it and use it.

sounds like you had a good buy mate, theres a few little things to do on mine but im not bothered at the minute really. fixed the heated seat on drivers side earlier, light was coming on but no heat so gave the relay a whack with my torch and she clicked into life.
 
Don't demobilize the EGR as they don't like it, and can cause this 2000 rpm misfire thing with smoke, make sure your engine temperature reaches normal after a short drive and check none of the vacuum pipes have perished, also check the EGR is not gummed up.

ive read a lot of conflicting stories regarding the egr some say removing it causes the 2k miss and others say it cures it. i may blank it and see if it stops and if not re fit so that i know its back to how it is now. im not massively bothered about it tbh the car run fine plenty of power. as soon as i can get 10 mins of decent weather ill run it up to temp and get the other half to hold it at 2k rpm whilst i have a browse around.

Mines stopped, currently, no misfire, no egr. But I've done so much work on it lately, I've either fixed it by accident, or it'll be back soon!!

i probably will pull it off and see what happens. what work have you done to yours that made you fixed it by accident?
 
Well, it all started a few months back when the engine was sounding ropey and I had a strange electrical fault.
Synergy taken off, egr valve put back on(engine back to stock)
Engine oil change + filter
ATF changed.
MAF off and cleaned
Manifold off and cleaned
Air filter cleaned (it's a piper cross)
New battery
All fuses pulled and checked
All relays pulled and checked
New brake switch and harness
All engine electrical connections pulled cleaned and put back.
EGR taken back off
Synergy back on, setting 1
Display binnacle removed cleaned, replaced.
Engine oil + filter changed for a second time
ATF changed for a second time
Synergy moved to setting 2
The car has also been plugged into the Icarsoft LR2 numerous times for fault codes (most codes have been spurious due to the electrical thingy)
Car is back together apart from the under tray is still off, another ATF change is still to do, this is in the other thread, ATF fluid after 50,000 miles.
Currently it sounds great, drives beautiful and is behaving itself. Unfortunately I don't know what fixed what?
We shall have to wait and see

Well the 2K misfire plot thickens as mine has started doing it again although not so bad. It's more of a hesitation than a misfire. My EGR is clean and working with all new vacuum pipes. The only thing that is different is the fuel I put in the tank. I normally use the local cheap petrol station and use a fuel additive. Well this week, I didn't add the additive, that's the only change. So maybe the engine is super fussy about fuel? Next fill, I'll use V power to see if that makes a difference.
I will get to the bottom of this.
 
I used to have an 04 HSEtd4, I blanked off the erg and all was fine, the engine had done 149000 when I sold it. The only time mine was lumpy was when I put supermarket fuel in, other than that I ran it on shell fuel and twice a year would run whole tank of V power through it to give it a clean. Was sad to see it go, but had other plans.

Some do appear to be fussy. Mine runs bad on supermarket fuel, Esso, jet and that shell fuel save stuff.
But loves murco, texaco, and those strange brands you get from small garages in Lincolnshire and Norfolk.
I believe it's to do with the cetane content. I have a cetane booster that I use if I have to put some of the fuel in it doesn't like. Seems to help.

hmmm, maybe i should try some better fuel before i start pulling stuff apart, although id like to clean egr and manifold anyway just to be sure.

The additive I normally use every fill does contain a centane improver. However this last fill, I neglected to put it in.
I still suspect that the injector loom isn't perfect though. I've noticed a peculiar dropout and momentary miss just after startup, even if the glow plugs weren't needed. Very odd and another thing to check. I'm thinking that I might change the MAF for one of those £25 bay specials and check the injector loom too.

It is possible that the hiccup at startup is an injector showing early signs of failure.
