Earthing and poor battery charge are main culprits .. though low fuel is never good either .. ;)

cheers, hit a few snags lately, its not starting very well, changed my air bleed valve and haven't managed to get it started again, think it could be due to being on a slope with very lower fuel level and a poor battery.

will get some fuel in her and a good charge. If any one has any other ideas what it could be let me know

Hi Steve, once you are confident about the battery I would be doing a 'purge process' if I were you.

Turn ignition to position II, leave for three minutes to purge, then fire her up.

Whilst purging if you stand by the rear offside wheel you will hear the pump working away, gurgling and that.

Btw, did you put in a new pump in the tank or the original one? If it's the original did you take it out of the tank and clean it's internal filter? They can get really bunged-up with black gunge.

I've got a good earth that goes on the engine under the altenator looked good and I cleaned the eye on the end of the wire that the bolt goes through, should there be another earth anywhere?

I have purged it twice since replacing the air bleed valve pumped throttle 5 times eml flashers, I haven't touched the pump at all prob best to do that before filling it with fuel.

If your earths are the braided wire type, give them a good pull .. Mine looked great, nice and shiny ... but were corroded inside and only a small effort broke them! Rust/corrosion doesn't conduct worth a damn ..

From memory there are three main earths plus several smaller ones.

If you have Rave 2, you will find a list of them and their locations.

I never found rave very easy to use the one time I tried for my p38, so haven't bothered downloading it, plus my lap top isn't working and was trying not to fill up my other halfs with it.

Need to check for the other earths told theres one need the battery / jack for the ecu so will try and clean that.

well before puting any more fuel in it I thought it was a good time to take the pump out and clean out the in tank filter, I haven't touched the interior and got a complete replacement to fit, I don't keep my cars this dirty on the inside just the outside. lol

The fuel gauge is now reading around a quarter and i jacked the back up so it was a little more level purged and system 3 times, But still nothing.

Think I'm going to check for fault codes again and look at these earths, I just want it running now

Well a late up date, this is the short vertion of events but after ALOT of messing about I found I wasn't getting any fuel to the engine even though it sounded like there was it was mainly air, in the end I had to take the air bleed valve out of the fuel filter housing and it bleed up in the end been using it like that but when starting it I had to wait for the pump to prime before cranking, now I've fitted the new air bleed valve back in its all running and i'll test at the weekend if it starts by cranking straight away rather than waiting for it to prime.

mean while I've be getting on with the mods, bought a second hand but not fitted light bar and some lights for it then for thought side lights in them would be cool so bought some leds and started the fitting.

All soldered up.

well yesterday, I changed my O/S/F abs sensor as my second hand axle had a damaged wire, thought the hub bearing was going to need to be swopped but it didn't so made the job a bit easier, It is a tight fit getting the plug though the hole between the hub and steering knuckle.

Also changed over my brake disk back plate as it was slightly damaged.

Lastly about 11pm last night i finished spraying my light bar with hammrite as it had a couple of chips and want it to last, next job is to fit it.

Thanks, well light bars been on a week and all wired up too, got a little bit of tidying up to do with the wiring and need to adjust the lights or make up some shields to stop the light shining on the screen.

Yesterday my misses found me some roof cross bars, not only were they free but she also went to pick them up too

The clamps were big enough to go round g4 bars so I looked if there were any G4 bars on ebay, thought they would cost a lot but they look cool, well I'll just say there still on the bay, with a small mod to the clamps a bit of paint to cover were I cut them, done at lunch time, was missing 3 end caps but took 2 off my gutter mount racks i had on my p38 and they are glued and riveted on, just need one more now.

Very nice looking DII there Steve, you've done a great job.

Just hope she runs as good as she looks?

Cheers
Dave

She's still in early days 200 odd mile on the engine but running sweet, got a few little mechanical job none urgent but on the list are aux belt tentioner as there's a little rattle only when the air cons on. Front shock lower bushes and rear anti roll bar link.

I did a quick job this afternoon before our street party and checked the rear axle breather as everyone say's it just goes up the wheel arch and I checked another D2 at work and it just went into the chassis, well I'd already looked under mine and it was longer the the other D2 and went right to the rear and up towards the upper rear light so today I whipped the light out and it does go nearly to the top of the rear light so that's plenty high enough,

I did notice a lot of dust and dirt up there ( like the rest of the car was ) so thought I better check the air intake for the suspension compressor. There's a plastic top then a foam filter under it full of dust so took the out and gave it a blow out. Will give it a clean down there when I've got more time.

then I came to change the fuel filler neck over saw this connect (only took a pic after i fitted the nice tight fit pipe) and i'm guessing that is the fuel tank breather, so i fitted a lengh of fuel pipe on it so i can extend it up the quarter panel behind the light of maybe to the front.

Been doing some more stripping out of the interior over the last week, the back's been hoovered, washed, and washed again to get ride of the dust, the rear door cards are off aslo off and the inside of the doors have been cleaned and today I took the front seats out and carpet's and finished washing the front and rear foot wells out tonight. The new front carpets have been cleaned and hopefully ready to go back in tomorrow lunch time together with the leather drivers seat.

This is the front after a quick hoover

very slight set back to day, the heavy down poor we had here this morning decided to find its way in the passenger foot well, After 10mins with the hose pipe on it, I found it was coming in the top corning of the A pillar, there was a gap in the sealant where 2 panels meet, so cleaned it dried it and resealed it also add some sealant to the drivers side as it wasn't no where near as bad as the passenger side but not tip top.

So as tomorrow talks of rain I pressed on tonight so get it usable again.
