crikey didnt even realise they used the old tapley tester for mot's.

I got a great big lump of a thing i use when i have to do the 6 weekly checks on me buses as just a rough guidance to the brake efficiency. You need a hiab just to pick it up.

i dont think i would put it on me defender as i dont rekon i would get much of a reading from it. although it just passed mot brakes are what i describe as a bit floaty

Just before I start, it's my first Landy and I'm a complete novice when it comes to motor vehicles so please forgive my ignorance if it's showing :)

Recently had MOT abandoned on my defender 90. Under the reasons for refusal was .....

001 offside rear additional braking device heat shield missing (3.6.I.3)
002 Nearside rear additional braking device heat shield missing (3.6.I.3)
...... And so on......

When I checked the MOT checklist in the MOT inspection manual it states ....

Section 3.6
I ......... additional braking devices
3 ........ Check for presence and condition of heat shields "if required".
Reason for rejecting.
3 ........ A heat shield missing or damaged.

I'm assuming they are referring to the mud/dirt shields. When I checked mine, they were just stumps about an inch long. Is this possibly the reason why he included these in the failure list, because the remains were still attached......well I think it's the remains .... LoL? If I was to remove the remains would I get through my retest (once all other jobs are sorted of course) without them fitted. From what I'm reading on here they're more trouble than they're worth and I'd rather not go to the trouble, and expense, of fitting them if I don't require them for a pass.

abandoned? what exactly did it fail on (post a pic of the fail list)
I didnt know they could abandon a test unless it was deemed too dangerous to continue, I've seen some right sheds be motd, a couple of folk I know who do up cars just take it straight for an MOT, knowing its never going to pass, just to have a list of what needs sorting.
Id be asking them to clarify, on a defender its not a heat sheild, its a dirt/mud shield.
