Last one I did with soap powder

Usually I cut up a couple of those little sponges with the green scourer on them. Shove these in the hole and part fill with warm water - maybe some cleaning agent of your choice, and similar to the earlier suggestion of builders sand and fairy liquid, just swill it all around for a while and flush it out. The bits of sponge are easier to see than builders sand.
