Mike mine has been done as well but not as bad - one of my sons was changing the tyres and decided to use the high lift jack - what could I say when he was helping!!.
Your lucky Ken you can blame him. I have no one to blame but myself. The Misses was not around. I have given up using the high lift jack, I find them dangerous and its so easy to damage the vehicle.
 
Ill be two days behind you Ken, I'm guessing we will be at the campsite at around 4ish on the Sunday, are you using a paper airfilter now?
Its alright I can wait with the bonnet up - yes definitely paper filter - and I'm not going to follow in anyone's dust cloud - and hopefully transfer box will have stopped leaking!.

I can imagine, I was furious with myself for days. Anyway, its going in next month so hopefully all the dings and nicks will be taken care off. Should look smart for Morocco. I take it you have a modified air filter. Any particular reason to have gone down that route?
 
Paper filters work better in dust than K&N oiled cotton filters that just collect dust and clog up, Ill bring some spare EP90 just in case eh? LOL
 
I don't understand. I have the original 200 tdi air filter. I use OEM replacement filters. What is K&N filter? Don't think I like the sound of them anyway if that's what caused the problem on Ken's

Very funny - but then it leaked also on the Turkey trip - 3 refills again - then again I'm going to bring some as well

The K&N costs about £80 and sucks in air (and dust) at a fast rate and effectively killed the engine - so the cheapy genuine ones from now on.
 
They are good filters for road use, they give better air flow, but they are made of cotton and you have to oil them, they simply clog up with dust, you would have to wash it out with petrol each day and re oil it to be effective, once it clogs up, basically you get black smoke all the time which means a fuel rich mixture in the combustion chambers leading to elevated head temperatures. I didn't know Ken had one fitted until nearly at the end of the trip and I think Matt knocked some of the crap out of it, but I think some damage must have occurred internally by then. I can't use a K&N filter anyway as the oil used is corrosive to the air flow sensor in the Td5, Mahle paper filters are what I use, I used 3 in Morocco.
 
Hmm, Well mine seemed to work OK with the box standard 200 tdi filter. Think I will stick with it. Actually I remember Ken's Defender pushing out quiet a lot of black smoke when under load on our last Morocco trip.

Are you sure it was so bad - have you been doctoring the photo Mike to make it look worse than it was - nice picture otherwise. Hope you are all considering doing the full day run from Assa to Smara - brilliant track with outstanding views.
 
Hate to tell you this Ken, but that was the only picture we could see the back of your Defender. The rest were just a black cloud.
If ISI attack we will get you to take point and lay a smoke screen for our escape. Was the Assa to Smara the one you, Chris and I did with out Adam and the Garsides ?

Assa to Smara is the run south into Western Sahara.

Must be km James - sure I've done it in 10 hours - but that was going some as we were late for a meet at some ancient rock carvings.

Think Samara is at the bottom of your red line Mike - but the dog leg below that is more amazing still with a lake in the middle of the dunes, a row of sand dunes running south east to north west and a couple of deep sebkats one of which can be driven with care.

Yes Semara is at the bottom of the map, it doesn't come out when I tried to print it but comes out on my screen when enlarged. Sounds Great. I'm still trying to get to grips with my Toughbook and Bascamp. Think I'm going to end up in your smoke screen again as I'm not making much progress.
