Don't think you want to see me running through the desert in the chud to be honest, but if that's what you want.............
Add four new wheel bearings to the calliper and disc change now, after arsing about trying to find some Timken ones I ran out of time and only managed to put the cross member back on, install the down pipe and remove one rear disk, strip a bolt on the hub, smoke endless fags, and try not to loose my lower intestines out my ass undoing the proxy calliper bolts. Try again tomorrow. Kind of glad I am replacing all this stuff as I don't fancy trying to remove some of this stuff in the sticks, as with most of the stuff I am removing for the first time since it was built in 2005. full service history my coddley. Once this stuff is done, I will start on phase two in Dec, suspension, steering, remap, winch bumper and winch, interior fit out, roof rack, lighting, cooling system upgrade to a 2 core alloy rad and hose replacement, drive flange upgrade, replace all UJs, bushes, leaving me hopefully hassle free on the trip and as most of parts I'm removing are in good condition I will have ample spares to bring along. Call me paranoid I will look at bringing a spare injector loom, ECU, fuel pressure regulator, and water pump, oh and the way things are going full hazmat suit!

Wow, that is a lot of stuff, more than I have changed and I'm doing a rebuild!

Did some body prep yesterday with the help of sarah. Mine should be mostly back together in a couple of weeks.

You could almost build another one with all the bits your going to have left. Think we will have to call you the mobile spares shop.
Your making me feel guilty. I feel I should do something to mine. Just use mine to chase off a load of hunters shooting on my land. Its covered in mud now.

After two days, I now have all the brakes done, with exception of buying some anti pad rattle springs that decided to sacrifice themselves wilst removing the pad pins, my mechanic friend does not think we will need a two core radiator fitted but he thinks I'm anal about everything.
In fact they keep calling me AJ, for anal James, as I do tend to insist on a proper job being done and have a liking for replacing any rusty fixing with nice new shiny stainless fixings.
But that's all the work on the truck for now until Dec, just going to put it to bed in the barn, so it now frees me up to study the rout and research future parts to buy, mmmmmmm, shiny new parts.

Mine's in the barn also - all nice and snug with all sorts of agricultural kit around it - and so it is not as easy to nick.

Not sure many of the TD5 spares would help us sadly.

I will have a few parts spare too, but not that magnitude as most of the stuff I have swapped is broken!

Someone who I know from work is giving me a CB tomorrow, so that will help

They'd help me :D :p

All the diffs are the same in our vehicles apart from 110 rears so we probably only need a few between us.

Ill bring a comprehensive tool kit and ill have a good air compressor. Inverter. Fridge. Cb. Led bar. And some get you home gear ;)

Have been trying to get a spare Salisbury diff to take but they are rarer than rare - will be taking rear halfshafts - but have to say after many trips not broken anything - even after many many days hard graft in the sand dunes in southern Libya - famous last words of course.

Ha, the one and only benefit of having 2 rover diffs!

I'm going to try and find a diff to take before we go I think, as they haven't had any attention in my rebuild other than an oil change.

I think the chances of a Salisbury diff breaking would be rather rare. The one that broke on James's 90 I think was a Rover one. I also have a Salisbury on the front just for good measure.

Just been talking to someone who went to Morocco a while ago and they said that it is illegal to enter Morocco with a CB radio attached.

Did you guys have any problems with this last time you went?

I have done some reading and the best thing to do seems to be to take the aerial off and hide it until you are in the country.

Motorhome CB Radio , CB Radio and The Law

That's right James - we take it off and place the CB out of site at Algerciras and then put them back on at the first motorway service station in Morocco - the army and local police take no notice of CBs.

Ahh, ok. Gotcha :)

So I need to make it reasonably easy to remove.

If you remove the aerial and keep it out of site and cover the radio you should be alright. As long as you don't make it obvious you should be fine. The port police are mainly looking for fire arms and checking the locals going back to Morocco loaded with stuff they have purchased from car boot sales. When considering CB's make sure you have a good speaker. I had a hand held one plus a mic/speaker and I could hardly hear a thing when you have the windows open and driving along rough surfaces.

I'll bring the specific Td5 stuff obviously, why don't we all bring a drive shaft each? I'll have UJs, drive hubs, couple of spare rear shocks, probably bring some ball joints too, the front wheel bearing I removed and changed on Sunday were as new, so I will clean them and pack them with grease and seal them up, I will soak the front callipers over the next few months in diesel I removed and changed too, and bring them.
Not sure yet with regards to the spare Td5 ECU if that has to be coded to a specific vehicle yet, I'm sure it does, but all the other stuff is transferable between mine and the Disco, I am mindful that I have a small amount to electronics on my 110 over than the 300 tdi, and I want to cover myself, whatever parts will be required I won't bring anyway, never do.
As for a CB, I am going to get one of those roof mounted consoles and mount it there, if needs be I can disconnect the mic, and put one of those old fashioned radio blanking plates over it. I've got one of those quiet two stroke generators that I could build in, and be used for lighting at night, and maybe run my fridge if that would be of use?

I'm replacing my suspension before the trip so ill bring the parts I take off as spares rear shocks front shocks etc as im the only one with that type. The rover diffs are inter changeable but mine are 4 pin which are betterer :p

I may bring a ob2 reader too if I can snag it from the workshop for 3 weeks :D

Cb will either be in the cubby box or some other similar hiding place to get round the law :)

I think that was an older Disco 300 one that broke, and remember the ratios were out so there was a lot of torque going through it and James driving it as well.

Just got the cb from my friend, its a midlands 38 UK and says UK only in big letters all over it. Any ideas what that means? Can I not use it abroad?

Google was unclear!

I'm sure SpaceDawg , (Chris) will come back to you, he is more genned up on CB's. I think it means you have 38 UK channels. Most of the newer CB's now tend to have 40 UK channel's and 40 European channels. Your 38 UK channels will still work abroad, just that everyone will have to tune into one of your UK channels for you to receive and send. On the last trip we all used a UK channel so as not to get interference from other CB users out there.

Any sort of security issues in Morocco, other than common sense needed? I was in Egypt all Aug, and Westerners are not allowed in the Sinai dessert anymore, even if going on an organised trip with armed "tourist Police" due to kidnappings and rapes, pretty gutted really as I had lined up a Renegade Jeep to rent all month.
Appreciate that Egypt is politically on a tipping point of flipping over in to chaos again, but just like to know after being there and seeing the hatred towards the Brits and the Yanks by quite a lot of the people there, especially in Cairo where extremism is rife.
