On the subject of tools I bought a 200 piece Halfords professional socket/ ratchet spanner set, even comes with a lifetime warranty apparently, reason I bought it was I facing a dilemma as to what to bring and how to store it, easy, it came in a case for storage. I will add a few things like mole grips, various pliers and screwdrivers etc. Halfords are doing these kits half price at £150 right now.

I am happy to meet up in Reading or wherever really, don't mind.
 
As a meet can I suggest somewhere around Reading - just over 2 hours from Wales for me - say one day at weekend 24/25 January - any other time or location ok by me though am away from mid February.



Reading is ok for us, though it is a 3 hour trek. Is there somewhere a bit more central to everyone? Don't mind if not.
 
i have one of them 200 piece halfords socket sets although its not 200 pieces any more lost loads of sockets when in morroco i hit a big pot hole in the desert when we was running away from the sand storm and the back door came flying open and the socket set fell out and opened up so if your lucky you might find some down there as i couldnt find them all, as for spares i would take spare half shafts and a few bits for your diffs as it was the centre pin what snapped in mine which went straight through the axle casing

I'm hopefully swapping my exhaust system (not the one currently on!) for a complete set of half shafts and a diff.

I have got a set of rear half shafts, from what I understand 2002 onwards Defenders have P38 diffs fitted anyways, so hopefully mine should be ok, checked them and they seem pretty much free of play, so far that is........

Sorry not true its only p38 and v8 90's that had 4 pin diffs.
 
Yeah, I thinks that's a good point, I'd just feel better if I have everything myself, although probably not possible and much easier to split between everyone.
In all fairness I should have no problems as I've just done a complete rebuild, but my mind says always expect the unexpected.
I was thinking the more you can do the better and to be fair I didn't realise garage charges where so reasonable, until Oldun said what he had done.

Yes I've fitted a cummins 6bt, so a big old lump, and you also mention drive train.
This is where my concern lies and is why I'm unsure of my vehicle suitability as posted the other day.
As of yet it isn't finished, and I have standard axle internals which is a massive worry, Ashcroft internals are the ideal but massive money :(
And is part and parcel of why I was worried about the time scale for this trip.

I am no expert in these matters by any means but my understanding is the 90's have Land Rover diffs which are not as strong as Salisbury's as fitted to 110 up to around 2002. It was a 90 that broke a diff with a standard 300 tdi. Having a large Cummins with loads more low down grunt its going to be your diffs that are the weak point. I have a salisbury also fitted to the front of mine and I feel a lot more comfortable knowing that.

The disco has the same diffs and that was ok. I don't think the diffs are quite that bad or LR wouldn't have fitted them for 40 years+!

I'm taking a spare diff so fingers crossed I should be ok.
 
i dont know if it makes a differnce but the 90 has a 300 tdi convesion and is running 10 spline half shafts i dont know if the diffs are any diffrent.
Although i am quite rough with stuff and am quite new to offroad driving as i have only been driving abit over a year

Exactly, yes the 90 diffs are not as strong and I'd be concerned about them at the best of times, as well as the half shafts.
Ashcroft centres and shafts are the only way I think, but big money and isn't going to happen for a fair while yet.
Kinda think a more standard motor would be a better start.
 
yes it would be better to keep it all standard then you can get spare parts for it everywhere if you have a non standard parts when in morocco it would probably have to be a special order to the place you originally bought the part from although i can imagine with all the power in the cummins engine you have fitted it will tear the half shafts and diffs apart for fun :)
 
Could have done with my Defender last night. Drove up to Holland overnight, -3 degrees and snow. Passed several accidents on route. Clear blue sky and 4 degrees at the moment.
 
Just read through your whole thread. Lots of good tips so thanks for that. I hadn't even considered trying to limit weight to be honest.

I think it would be good to meet up if we could manage to cross paths.
Looks as if our routes will be more over in Eastern Morocco (they were last time the lads were there), well away from the tourist trails, so meeting up could be a problem. Still, you never know.

If you need to know anything about our trip, routes, planning, etc. simply PM James (yep, another one - common as muck!!!) username Tembo on the Return to N.E. Morocco 2015... - Page 8 forum. He's very knowledgeable when it comes to foreign travel, plus extremely helpful.

I'll drop in here every so often to check on progress. Cheers for now!

Ours obviously isn't on my 90 yet as we are too short, but seems pretty good for the money, especially with the awning etc. The manual wasn't in any language I could understand though so that took a while to work out!



Hoping to find some taller people or take it up to the farm and lift on soon.
