Have changed rear cylinders, replaced brake shoes, changed back axle wheel bearings etc, bled brakes, no probs so far, since previous probs.

Springs etc all in proper place, wheels rotate forwards, but lock solid in reverse, this seems to be only on the offside wheel.....

Any ideas??

I have even chamfered both leading and trailing edges of the shoes, still no joy.....

Try removing the brake drum and seeing if it still does it. If it does you can rule out the brake shoes.

Did that, all works fine,,,, even took half shaft out, and left drum on, still locked in reverse.....Free without drum

Only does it with the drum in place, points to the shoes, but why??

can you supply a picture of the locking drum?

Will try tomoz...

Drums are only apx a year old, so no wear on them...

Me thinks maybe the bottom spring is weak, and maybe not holding the top of the trailing shoe in the caliper hard enough, only a thought.....

have you got yer shoes on the right way round?

Only one way they can go....
Spring bar shoe, post facing inwards, spring behind adjuster, and other end of spring on post attached to back plate, both shoes have the curved cutout at the bottom, locking plate in place etc.....

I take it you've checked that the springs are fitted correctly?

Yes, 3 times now...

Had shoes off drum on, turns freely....

It has to be the shoes.

Funny thing is, if you clamp the flexible tube before the axle, the pedal feels great, front brakes perfect, release the clamp, and pedal feels ****e, almost to the floor again, all this despite using and easybleed, no bubbles at all.

I digress though, it does not solve the probs of the drum locking in reverse...

Cylinder...

Reckon its going to be the next purchase, just to eliminate the bloody thing...

Have to admit even before I changed the shoes the brakes were crap, one pump and brilliant.... Put it down to a 35 year old vehicle without a servo....

I know this mite be dumb - but here goes.....
It used to be trick many moons ago to chamfer the front and rear edges of the brake material - helps stopping it snatching. Cant do any harm.

but re-reading the thread, if, by clamping the flex pipe, the brakes are much improved, I reckon the shoes are not being pulled back by the springs and are locking on - when driving forward, the drum rubs over the shoes, but when in reverse, the shoes jam into the drum and lock the wheel. Change the slave cylinder.

switch the rear slave cyls over, o/s to n/s, that will eliminate a poss faulty cylinder.
it has been known.

ive filed off the edges of new shoes many times and cured similar probs.
try another drum. they were never the most precise things ever made!

lol - any more swap options? why not try swapping the car fur anuvva one - it dont cure the probs, but yu change em for a whole new lot ;)
