This is the location of the leads in the distributor of the 1995 3.9 onwards D1 here in the UK . The yellow number tags I put on just for the photo, the existing white ones are a little bit faded now🙂

The firing order is the same for the 3.5 and 3.9 (changes when fitted in the Range Rover )your set up is one position out from the reference point but the firing order is still 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2 so is correct but your marking are out

Your ignition lead renumbering of my photo at the clip is for the 3.5.😉

With the 3.5 engine number 1 lead was plugged in the distributor cap next to the bottom clip, now with the 3.9 that position is now number 8 and next door going anti-clockwise is lead number 1

So surprise other 3.9 owners we’re following a similar drawing when replacing the ignition leads, me included following exactly my 3.5 drawing, and the result when starting the engine was a misfire.

Fortunately somehow I got the 3.9 drawing and saw my error was continuing to use my 3.5 layout starting at the bottom clip with the lead 1 & 8 either side, and so quickly rectified.

The leads i have are replacements and I numbered a few leads with my yellow stickers, in a rush for the photo, so back as it was now and has been for a long while.

I’v found a similar copy of the round distributor layout shown in my Haynes workshop manual for my 3.5 RR I owned and which shows it in chapter for the V8 RR with carburettors.

Well, no wonder distributor caps and other parts of the ignition system for the early V8s have a few part numbers available, shown the parts catalogue for the series one RR and disco 1.
