So I replaced the oil in both axles on my D2 TD5 yesterday. The oil in the rear was again emulsified :( I must check the breather tube - the pinion oil seal was replaced recently so that should be fine, and it doesn't leak.

The oil in the front was blackened and the magnetic drain plug was covered by about 3mm worth of fur :( Is this "normal" ?

I fear I need to save up for a new differential....

very normal, especially if oil change long overdue, time to worry is when plug comes out with bits on it, gearteeth or bearing cage are expensive.

I wouldn't worry if the diffs are still quiet.

You should have seen some of the christmas trees we used to pull out of the old Lynx Gem engines. Still nearly always got the ok from Rolls-Royce to keep flying them :)

Thanks guys - no bits, just fur. I'm guessing this was a legacy from a few months ago when my local garage did a full drivetrain fluid change; they said the front diff was full of black crap so God knows when it was last changed. It'll take a couple of changes to get rid of stuff ;)
